Transfer fees absolutely do have to do with a players earnings. It's the starting basis for any negotiation. Other things then come in to it such as player image rights and potential revenue generated by the player. You'd have a very hard job justifying £2-3m for a player playing for St Mirren in the final year of his contract, just as we would at Aberdeen too. That's the reason Aberdeen gave Scott McKenna several new contracts in the space of a couple of years.

Are St Mirren paying him the wages of a £2-£3m player? If not then you're never going to get anything like that in the final year of his contract.

What a state to get yourself in to. 9am too. Something daft, i.e way above his market value while he has a year left on his contract. I'm not suggesting you take a token lesser fee. I'm suggesting that it's a nightmare situation for St Mirren as if you have genuine top 3-6 ambitions then you risk losing players for free as it's often harder to replace the player. Something I've seen all too well at Aberdeen.

Exactly. McGhee was a strange one. He wasn't well funded as JC had wiped the budget and then the club panicked and let him sign shite players on decent wages (Grassi being one). We were also missing three players who had a good chance of starting if available (McCrorie, Hedges, Taylor) with MacKenzie also knocking on the door. Glass has been left a shambles to deal with. Let's give him more than three games before we pine for Derek McInnes. IMO Glass should be implementing his style now. There's no point of him setting the team up to play the way he wants to play in the summer before the European (fingers crossed) games. Get the players who will be able to play accustomed.
