  1. Have I been historically inaccurate? When did they go bust? I've just noticed that Vale of Leven have won the Scottish Cup as much times as Hibs and they were dissolved in 1929 and won their last Cup in 1879 although they were losing finalists in 1890 (losing to ten time winners Queen's Park)
  2. Ah a young gun eh!...we won it 5 times between 1982-1990, that's twice more in a eight year spell than Hibs have won it in their 146 year history.* We do enjoy reflecting on the past at Aberdeen because the present and future ain't so bright . So I suppose, given those stats on Hibs Scottish Cup record, it's fair enough that you consider Stevenson a legend. *Although we've only won it twice out with that eight year period ourselves...........
  3. I'd be astonished if Ramirez is at Aberdeen by the start of next season. I think he'll want to return to the States and I don't think Goodwin will be too upset about that decision.
  4. You're talking about the Scottish Championship here, right? If an Aberdeen player was heavily involved in a season in which we were relegated but stuck around long enough to eventually return back to the Premiership as a Championship winner then legend wouldn't be the noun I'd be thinking of to describe him. Indeed, I might find out soon what I think of Aberdeen players that oversee relegation...
  5. Yeah, he was Scottish, a fixture in the first XI for years for one of the Gruesomes, steered clear of injury and made himself available more often than not for Scottish selection. All the right conditions in place to get into the 50 club. Arguably, he should've been nearer 100 caps though. Obviously, he would've had a lot more if the national team was little more successful. Paul McStay (and I only use him as he had a similar length of service at Celtic and captain who some thought should've left Scottish football to better himself but never did) won 76 caps in an era where the national team played less matches.
  6. If you don't make any notable 'achievements' with Scotland, and we're only talking about qualification for the World Cup or Euros, then the plain fact is your international career is going to be tainted by failure, and thus, less fondly remembered, if remembered at all. There will come a time when we will start qualifying again (we did, although not particularly gloriously, for Euro2020) and this fallow period (1998-2018ish at the time of typing) will be consigned to the dustbin of history. I take @VincentGuerin point that one or two players international careers during this period might be worth recalling, such as McFadden but in the end, if it results in failure to qualify then what did it matter? I would rather recall Scotland's 2-0 victory against France in 1989 than helped us to Italia90 rather than the two victories in the 2008 qualifying competition against the same country which ultimately took us nowhere. Scott Brown's 55 matches for Scotland will go alongside his 33 matches for Aberdeen, as a fairly minor footnote to his career that nobody will recall much about in 20 years time. He's going to be remembered as the Celtic captain during the one horse race era. In comparison, I still have fond memories of some Paul McStay moments in a Scotland jersey. I recall pretty much nothing of Scott Brown in a Scotland jersey despite it being closer to today than McStay's time.
  7. I have to agree, I don't think we were credible challengers for the title in either of the seasons mentioned. I think if we were serious challengers we would've won one of those titles, I don't think Celtic were particularly strong. Milne didn't back his manager in either of the January windows with any intent (as he didn't in 2007/08 when it could have made a difference). You don't win titles with the other Scott Brown in goals I think some of my fellow Dons like to fool themselves that the title was on but the inaction of the club said they didn't truly believe. If you're going to win a league title everyone needs to have belief that it can be done.
  8. I didn't see the match last night but I was so disappointed to see Brown in the first XI. I thought the team and shape that finished against United did enough to warrant another go, unless there was injuries. I was hoping that Goodwin would ease Brown out and stop playing him.
  9. What do you mean by "the terrace"? Section Y, View from The Terrace (which I find impossible to watch) or something else? With regards Sticky Bates, as he's known on Wikipedia, there's a wide disparity between his playing 'qualities' and his wages. The same goes for Gallagher. Bates must have a very good agent is my conclusion.
  10. I agree, I don't think the game will go ahead on March 24th. I suspect the war will escalate as the month progresses. Even if they can assemble players and staff, I don't think the appetite will be their to play a match whilst their country and citizens are under bombardment.
  11. I eventually got into the ticket site at around 11:30 where the game was marked as sold out. I refreshed five minutes later, and the sold out banner had gone. I clicked into the seating plan to see all the stadium marked as grey and unavailable. However, although the dropdowns were blank on the pane to the left hand side, I just selected two tickets and I managed to get two tickets with a reduced view in the East Stand for £22 each.
  12. 0-3 to the Dons with wingers Besuijen and Kennedy running riot....I just feel someone is away to take a pasting from a rampant Dons
  13. Ah, I didn't go to that so it didn't appear on my listing, I was at a gig (Brian Jonestown Massacre) in Leeds the Friday night before. Those noughties elite Guffball friendlies (Manchester United and Liverpool) sold out pretty quickly as armchair fans flocked to see their south of the border idols. Therefore, it doesn't really count as thousands wouldn't have been attending to see the Dons, although technically you're correct. Did Manchester United and Liverpool take up significant travelling supports for those games? I didn't go to either....Didn't a Liverpool based fan end up in court for firing an air gun or something?
  14. Not sell-outs but there has certainly been two matches against Hearts that were in excess of 18,000 and played on Saturday at 3pm in recent memory 27th December 2008 Aberdeen 1-0 Hearts (Lee Miller) 18,021 30th December 2017 Aberdeen 0-0 Hearts 18,371 The attendance yesterday was officially 18,719 which certainly a lower "sell-out" capacity that we've seen previously.
  15. Aye, a great manager, and I've almost forgiven him for leaving us with a poor squad in that dark month of November 1986.
  16. I initially thought it was a Govan jakey having a relaxing swally and kip on the pitch.
  17. Maybe United's little cup run to the quarter-finals will distract your team from finishing above Aberdeen in the league placings for the first time in a decade.
  18. I've changed my mind on Goodwin too. It's early days but I just imagine the players would warm much better to his manner than to Stephen Glass. He seems much more suited to management than his predecessor.
  19. I've been moaning about the appointment of Jim Goodwin all week but I've changed my mind. How refreshing it was to have a proper manager again after 12 months of Glass and the last few months of spikey and belligerent Delboy. Welcome to Aberdeen Jim!
  20. Why should we accept it? I think you're correct, a significant portion can't accept, usually older fans that remember the success, this nonsense that we've been served up for about 20 of the last 25 seasons. Nor should we. Unfortunately, there's also a significant portion glady accept whatever they're given without question and then can't understand it when it all goes tits up. The appointment of Jim Goodwin is just another chapter of an ongoing debacle detailed over two books. The first, written by Stewart Milne, was a book based on tragedy and the destruction of a once powerful force, and now the second book, authored by Aberden's answer to Balzac namely Dave Cormack, is a farcical romp as the now weakened version becomes a pastiche of the once powerful force but without any success.
  21. I actually disagree with us "under-achieving". I think we've achieved exactly what our managerial choices, quality of playing staff and uninspiring and unimaginative boardrooms have dictated. It's the same when they talk about Newcastle United as serial under-achievers. They don't achieve anything because the club isn't run properly from the top and it filters down. Goodwin will be announced soon but there's not much enthusiasm from the supporters even when he has a blank slate. I also just wonder if we should have just allowed Barry Robson get on with it the meantime and taken a step back at boardroom level and consider our options carefully.
  22. Cummings and Griffiths have left though...No club needs Mark McGhoo the manager....Great player, terrible personality
  23. Is there any specific reason you've suggested this? I certainly remember him giving Jerel Ifil a chance at Aberdeen but wished he hadn't..
