  1. Our line-up on Saturday looked very much like Dick Campbell is trying to use all our resources and get us “safely” through the 3 games in a week. I would much rather we had played our strongest team on Saturday past and next Saturday v Dunfermline and a more experimental one tomorrow. A win v Ayr would have meant this game was almost a free hit. As it is, even a draw tomorrow would be a slightly disappointing return for the two games.

Win tomorrow and Saturday and I’ll gladly eat my words and hail Campbell as a tactical genius.

Boring but we should get through comfortably. The return of Steven Doris

Yeah, boring draw, was hoping for something like Banks o' Dee or Elgin away but we *should win with something to spare. Hope Doris plays and gets a great reception (and doesn't score).

    * i.e. approach the game with the correct attitude and don't think we just need to turn up to win, as per the game v Aberdeen B.

Despite being one of the first to jump to the management's defence, I'm not sure they got it right today, both with team selection, then how they were set up. Donnelly left midfield, McKenna too deep, no Liam Henderson, Clark starting....not for me I'm afraid.

Meant Nouble had to drop too deep as there was no service to him.  Well done Ayr deserved a point Michael  Moffat was good, sees an opportunity and then executes quickly  - seemples !

What Arbroath were lacking today.  Bring back Nicky.

Yep, agree with all of this. The only player we are missing from who was available for the wins v Partick, QoTS, Hamilton and Dunfermline is Low. Instead of putting e.g. Paterson or Gold in as a straight swap in the middle and stick with the successful formation and style, Dick has decided to change it all, this has coincided with our dip in form - if it ain't broke... I think some of this is to accommodate getting JT back in the team. I like him but I thought we looked better with, dare I say it, a bit more pace and dynamism at the back.

Also, utterly baffled that Linn isn't getting any game time at the moment. Surely in blustery conditions, a player who can take the ball down, has great close control, creativity and loves driving at a defence is a no-brainer, for at least part of the game.

  4. I only watched the stream but that was the worst I've seen us this season (Aberdeen kids aside), really poor once we scored and the equiliser was coming. Draw a fair result although we really should have scored with one of the chances we had late on - that one looked over the line to me. 4 games without a win, 3 points out of 12, the exciting, attacking football from a few weeks ago is fast becoming a distant memory. Not playing with anything like the confidence we had, and why the constant high ball (particularly in the wind)? when we kept it on the ground earlier in the season we were almost unstoppable.

Nouble looked a little off the pace, Dowds doesn't look to offer any more of a scoring threat than Donnelly. Surely that was a game for Bobby Linn to get the ball down and run at them.

Luckily other results today mean we've not lost any ground on teams below.

  5. The hard segregation for all games is a real pity. Understand when there’s a large travelling support but for games where there’s 300-400 or under I can’t see a problem. I’ve been going to Gayfield since the late 70s and, aside from a game v Aberdeen in the early 90s, I can’t ever recall any trouble in the ground. The only other time I remember anything was v Cowdenbeath in the early 80s when their fans were fighting amongst themselves.

  6. Just as well Campbell wasn’t in charge for the game at home, also v Ayr in March 2013. We lost 1-4 mostly due to Dallas giving Ayr two of the softest penalties you could ever imagine. The second one, if I remember correctly, was for the Ayr player jumping to unsuccessfully attempt to reach a high cross which went over his head. No appeals from Ayr and no contact from an Arbroath player. I was convinced Dallas had a bet on that day as there were just too many weird decisions. Had Campbell been in charge then he might have been getting out of gaol about now.

How many Arbroath fans are expected to come down to the Lang Toun?

A quick look and count on your ticket page looks like we’ve sold between 250-300 so far. Probably a good few more than that will go assuming you can buy up to kick off. I’m still not sure if I can make it.

Aye, but at least you can stand at the side when your team is kicking towards the far away goal.

Just out of curiosity, and not that it's a problem, but was there any specific reason for putting the away fans to the harbour end and the home fans to the amusements end?

The Pleasureland end was always the traditional home end up until maybe 20 years ago. It’s been Changed back this season, partially to enable Arbroath to have more stand seats but also I think it’s something to do with most fans preferring that end. I certainly do.

Martindale also said that if he can help Dick out, then he would. Presumably, that means that you'll get Panayiotou in on loan instead, or perhaps Hamilton back

Hamilton's no Nouble but I'd take him back in a heartbeat. His 8 goals played a big part in keeping us up last season.

Henderson has been superb, adjusted very well to the jump up of 2 leagues. Seen him very much as a left back in the summer so great that he has shown so much versatility.

We’ve got a very versatile squad with quite a few players able to move around comfortably in several positions - Stewart, Craigan, Gold, Henderson, McKenna. I think Campbell likes players like that and I think they’re necessary when operating as a part-time team, with a small squad in a tough league.

Me too. I’m a bit scared we’ll lose him in January or next summer. He’s a young lad who may fancy full time football.

He’s a very good player. Can’t see us losing him in January or summer for that matter, what contract is he on? if it’s short, I would get it extended pronto. Also don’t know what he does as a job but he might be happy being part-time.

  12. Shows how far the club has come in the past few years when some fans are slightly disappointed with a battling away draw to Morton with some influential players missing.

Every point is precious and despite our incredible start, a bit of introspection is needed at times. I definitely think, with our strongest team, that we are capable of a comfortable top half finish, even a playoff place. However, as yesterday showed, it doesn’t take much to knock the balance of the team off.

To lose, arguably your two most influential players to injury at the same time is a big chunk of bad luck so to come away with a point is pretty good imo.

Can I ask, how vital was Sheerin as a player to the success? Things seemed to tail off for you under him when he stopped playing.

Very good question. He was brilliant on the park for us, a very classy player. If my memory serves me right, there was a period in his first (title winning) season where we were losing our way a little when he got injured at Brechin I think. He missed a few games but it gave him more time to concentrate on the management role and we got back to form.

I think our form under him only really tailed off when he had off-field issues. Our first three seasons with him were - 1st (league 2), 2nd (league 1, lost in playoff) then 5th in league 1 so no obvious tail off until his 4th season where we were poor and relegated but, as I said, I think he had some personal issues to deal with.

  14. Really surprised at how Sheerin is doing with you guys. One thing I was convinced of was that he would have you playing exciting attacking fitba. As I’ve said here before, when he was with us (Arbroath), one thing you could be sure of was plenty of goals - for and against.

I can only think that it’s one of two things, either he had no real idea what he was doing with us as he was still learning management and just decided to go for it… or his spontaneity and enthusiasm for attacking fitba has been coached out of him at Aberdeen. I reckon it’s probably a combination of both.

Still think and hope he’ll come good for you.
