I get that but scoring barrel loads of goals in juniors will be easy, championships totally different level. as DC also says he wont look at players he thinks aren't as good as what he's already got. group games finish on Saturday so the SPL clubs will know who they will want in the squads for the upcoming season and more options will become available

It's just frustration, I totally get all the sensible points made re strikers. Just seems like it's been the same since we got promotion, just can't seem to get anyone signed who can score fucking goals. I know it's the way of the modern game but I would much rather have proper signings than loans .... or ideally, a combination of both.

Any free decent striker be snapped up already so highly unlikely to see a one on trial IMO. If we are bringing a striker in will either be loan or for a small fee id imagine.

Understand that but, as it's obviously the very big "elephant in the room", what harm would there be in at least trialing someone - there must be lower league/non league strikers out there that would be worth giving a trial to. We've found some gems from non-league in the past - Linn, Low, Murray.

I suppose the March served its purpose of giving players some minutes. A bit worrying to see Bobby limping off but hopefully it’s nothing. Chris Hamilton looked ok - do we need another right back? (Don’t answer that.) Dick said he is a holding midfielder. Paterson improved as the game went on. Coming straight from the Juniors he’ll need time. Antell looks a bit of a bomb scare. What a goal from Clarke! Glenn? Not sure, but he certainly got involved. I’m a bit concerned not to see a central striker on trial.

The bold bit is what really concerns me. Yes, we all agree that we desperately need striker/s but here we are, 9 days from our first league game and there seems to be absolutely zero urgency with even trialing anyone in friendlies.

  4. Not sure what tonight has achieved - a home pumping, laying bare our weaknesses - a completely toothless attack, and lack of quality depth at the back and in the middle. Antell also showing what we've heard from fans of pretty much every team he's been at.

A wee bit worried about Saturday as our normally solid defence has started leaking goals. We know we can't score but at least we were difficult to score against.

    Ach, it's only a friendly.

Swanks struggling in middle of park too, Williamson is massive boots to fill and don't think we have done it yet,
Glen Gabriel is a no for me so far, tough task against Rooney tho and he won't be up against that quality in the league

Yeah, difficult to assess Gabriel properly when he's up against a higher quality of opposition. Looks ok but nothing special.

Oh my god that East Stirling game mate still gives me and my dad nightmares, I must have been around 9 at the time and it was a great sunny day 4-2 up and dad saying it’s in the bag as only 7 minutes left, Think we then missed a sitter to go 5-2 up then all of a sudden if you remember it went dark and started absolutely pissing down then the rest was history, That walk home was so miserable, He will occasionally bring it up and I still have the programme for it, probably should burn it lol. I mind our keeper at the time Derek Balfour getting the blame for the result, My dad still laughs at the herald headline of BalFOUR blunders lol

I think we missed a few sitters that day. Another game where we were cruising and (almost) threw it away was the away cup game at Inverurie in 2012. Absolute cigars oot fitba after we went 3-0 up, I remember Sheerin trying to back heel one in from about 2 yards out and it being laughed off. We weren’t laughing by full time though as Loco’s threw the kitchen sink at us and scored 3 including 2 in the last 4 minutes. Thankfully we won the replay 3-1 but I hate nothing more than complacency as things can go very wrong, very quick - as proved by this thread.

Not only were we in the same league as Arbroath that season, we'd just lost 7 games in a row in the league including at Gayfield a fortnight before.

Yeah you’re correct and I was also at the league win. For some reason when I think about that game I assume Thistle we’re out of our league (literally).

A very good friend of mine is an Arbroath supporter.

He went ashen faced when I asked if he'd been at the Partick Thistle game where PT had 3 men sent off, but still won! 😄

Like this was 2 or 3 years after and he still couldn't find the words to talk about it. Fantastic fitba PTSD.

That was a very weird game. It was in the cup and Thistle were in a higher league and a defeat was expected so getting beat wasn’t the issue.

Our winger that day, Craig Cooper, was on fire and the Thistle defence just couldn’t cope with him at all. I think all 3, certainly 2, of the red cards were as a result of him being repeatedly fouled.

Unfortunately for Arbroath, Thistle coped with everything else thrown at them.

My feeling at the end was that I’d just witnessed a freak game, I wasn’t particularly annoyed or upset at not winning though.

  9. As a lifelong Arbroath supporter, there are plenty to choose from - Irvine Meadow, being pumped 4-1 by Spartans in the cup at home, 9-1 to Celtic etc but the one that affected me at the time more than any other was a home league game v East Stirlingshire in ‘92. It was a very open game with Arbroath well on top. 4-2 up with seven minutes to go and Shire pulled one back against the run of play, never mind, we’ll see it out, oh f**k Shire have equalised, how did we conspire to draw from a comfortable position that that?

Cue big daft centre half Wattie Boyd thinking “don’t worry, I’ll get the winner” gallops up field and loses the ball around the halfway line, Shire straight down the middle and hit the winner - 4-2 up to 4-5 down in the space of 7 minutes. Stunned silence at full time.

I also remember a game the following season where we were 2-0 up at home to Cowdenbeath in injury time at the end of the game and fucked it up ending 2-2.

That entire period from mid 80’s to late 90’s was a pretty grim period for us.

  10. We have definitely lacked a big target man striker for years now. Hopefully this means we’ll be more dangerous from crosses and set pieces as opposed to lumping it aimlessly up the park, and if he’s good with his feet, as he claims, then even better. Quite excited by this signing, certainly preferable to bringing in ageing players who’s best days are long gone or kids with very little match experience.

  11. According to the East Fife thread, Wreh played for them last night in a 15-0 win V Burntisland. Two games in two days is tough and he may have had an off night but I think it’s telling that he didn’t score. If you’re a striker and can’t score in a 15-0 win then not sure if he’s the answer.

I just don’t see the point in everyone repeating what is so obvious for all to see. People are on about a Jack Hamilton type loanee - He didn’t even join East Fife until the 9th of September last season. It’s not even the end of June yet, bit of calm required!

Don't think anyone is panicking and I for one am sure Dick will come good. No harm in discussing it though.

Does anyone else think we should sign a goalscorer?

As for signing two, think of one we could sign then get back to me on a second emoji1787.png

Yeah I know it's obvious and we're all saying it, doesn't mean it isn't a priority though.

As I said in my previous post - goalscorers are like hens teeth all over Scotland so maybe we need to think differently. I've always though McKenna has the pace and physicality to be given a chance up front, Stewart also. Both score a few from midfield too so know how to put the ba in the net when the opportunity arises.

The squad is looking good apart from the attack. Agree we need to replace Hamilton if we’re to get amongst the goals.

Agree, Donnelly and Hilson aren't going to score many. I think we need two goalscorers as relying on one isn't a good plan. Obviously this isn't easy as goalscorers are like hens teeth at all levels in Scotland. Would also like to see a Williamson type player in midfield too.

New variant yes and also just sheer-minded pessimism and long-term depression!

Understandable. My take on the, what feels like, constant push back on relaxation is that they are determined to make sure as many are fully vaccinated first so as to reduce the likelihood of having to lock down again. Aside from having to have booster injections and possible minor restriction e.g. masks or distancing in certain settings, I think we’ll be fine.

  16. 24 minutes ago, Cardle is Magic said:

Yes, that is reliant on latest data supporting the restrictions being removed which I don’t think will happen.

Even if they do, I fully expect some form of restrictions by November/December again so it would be a short-term measure.

What major change do you see happening in the next few weeks/months that would cause this? A vaccine resistant variant which causes a big increase in hospitalisations/deaths is the only plausible thing I can see. None of the data seems to point at that being a realistic danger.
