I’ve waited a long time to see a better team than we had in the 60s, but this has to be it. For consistent, powerful performances this has to be our best in living memory.

I started going to Gayfield in the very late 70s so missed out on the better sides of the past but comparing where we are now, on and off the pitch, to even 15 years ago is unreal.

When I think of some of the players/teams/managers in my time of supporting the club it’s really amazing to see where we are now. And to go from one pie stall, a virtually empty club shop, no corporate to speak of, the choice of pissing in the worst toilets this side of Trainspotting or behind the enclosure, to the off-field facilities and merchandise etc we have now is as impressive as the differences on the pitch.

  2. I thought Accies looked ok for the first half hour without actually threatening. they passed it around nicely at the back and in midfield but then seemed to run out of ideas and resort to aimless long punts once they got beyond the half way line. The no 6 looked decent and also Sideshow Bob at right back.

Even though it was a cagey first half we were still on top and Stewart’s composed finish rounded off the half well. The second half was one-way traffic and could have been more. Can’t wait to see Low’s free kick again.

There seems to be a trend at home this season with keeping it tight for the first half then upping the tempo and intensity in the second half.

The fitness of guys like Low, McKenna and Stewart etc is unreal and Accies' defence (see also Dunfermline and Partick before them) just couldn’t cope with the pace and accuracy of our attack, and with Nouble’s sheer physicality.

Everyone in maroon played well today but Scott Stewart was incredible, as good an individual performance as you’ll see. Would have liked to have seen Bobby get 15 minutes at the end as watching him running at a depleted and tired defence would have been fun to see.

Another great day to be a Lichtie.

I don't think you can approach games with fear of injury, it's just part of the game - play the strongest lineup available and try to win every game, no matter who you're playing. It's also still very early in the season and every minute of game time is crucial as far as fitness and match sharpness goes.
IMO we should have started with our strongest team today, built a lead then swapped out for the fringe players if/when we'd reached that point.
What did today's approach achieve apart from a confidence knocking defeat against a bunch of teenagers.... and definitive proof that we are f*cking hopeless at penalties? A nice comfortable win would have set us up perfectly for next week, and would have kept the good run and feel-good factor going.

I totally disagree agree with this. It's a worthless cup played against an opposition that's only there to try and get the Old firm B teams into the league. We need players match fit for when we get injuries/suspensions etc and if your not going to play them in a game like this that means nothing when will they get a game? This competition got the respect is deserved which is nothing.

Yeah, on reflection you and Simon are right. For this particular competition it was probably the correct approach, just don’t like to see us lose, particularly to teams that we should be beating comfortably.

Yes we were poor today and while we probably deserved to nick it over the 90 simply due to hitting the woodwork 4 bloody times, we were sluggish at times and lacked anything in the final third without most of our main attacking threats playing.

However, I'm not overly fussed as ultimately our first 11 were outstanding the past 2 weeks in the league and did the business, and today means very little in comparison to any league game we play. A real training game feel, which I think was hard to avoid considering the overall circumstances. Alternatively, if we played our strongest team and picked up a couple of knocks to key players in a comfortable win, people would be unhappy we risked all our big players.

You can easy ship Hilson to us on loan if you want?

I'm sure there will be a fair few who will offer to drive him to Links Park for you.

Personally I think he's a good player and has shown flashes but perhaps the Championship is just slightly above his level. Definitely good enough for League 1 and seems like a decent guy.

  6. Really poor. I know it's a diddy cup but the current Arbroath team shouldn't ever be losing to kids, even Albion Rovers scudded St Mirren B today.

Thought we started with the totally wrong attitude and lineup - looked like we thought we would just turn up and stroll it with fringe players and didn't really show enough (any) urgency until we went 1-0 down. They then put 11 behind the ball and it was almost impossible to break them down, nice finish by Henderson at the end though. Thought it was never coming after hitting the woodwork 4 times.

Knew we would lose the penalties, you could tell by the body language of the players. Their keeper played well and you just knew he was going to save a couple.

I was impressed with Henderson, Low (as usual), Clarke and Paterson but we look totally toothless without Nouble and McKenna on at the same time. Unfortunately Donnelly and Hilson in particular missed a big chance to step up. This would have been a perfect game for Hilson to demand the ball and run at their defence, but he was almost invisible. Dowds looks slow and unfit.

Ach well, we can concentrate on the league now I suppose. Just disappointing when we should really have won comfortably today against a very average looking side, by far the weakest side we've played this season so far.

Mind in League 1 he practically won us the title by Christmas  just playing off Wallace and banging the goals in, Lethal in the box and got that desire and energy to do well 🇱🇻⚽💪 It’s crazy DC only now has just started to play him back there in what most Lichties would agree is his best position.

Exactly. We all know he can score. Seemed crazy to me that he was used in a deeper role when we’ve been desperate for goals the last two seasons and we seemed to have a possible solution already at the club. Looks like a great partnership with Nouble.

  8. This needs nipped in the bud pronto. Such a good feeling around the club, on and off the field at the moment but the last thing we need is the over officious acts of the stewards discouraging away fans from attending or any fans, home or away trying to create a bit of an atmosphere. Jesus a wee lad in the home end tossed a folded up foil pie tray about 2 feet on to the edge of the pitch and the look he got from the wee wifey steward you would have thought he’d chucked a flare, not exactly how to encourage young fans.

  9. Great overall performance today. Very much reminded me of the Kelty cup game the other week - a fairly uninspiring first half performance where we looked to keep it tight followed by a swashbuckling second half playing towards the Pleasureland end. When we're on the front foot we look almost unstoppable and create barrow loads of chances with high-energy attacking play. Can't believe how fit the whole team look and would love some of what guys like Low and McKenna have in their half-time cuppa.

Looks like Nouble could be just what we were missing in the early part of the last two seasons and like the look of Paterson. Brilliant that we've scored as many league goals in 3 games this season as it took us 10 games to get last season.

Also, am I the only one who thought there was far more than 1600 there today?

You think the free kick was an acceptable goal for the keeper to lose? My dead granny could have come out her grave and saved that! Thistle had better of first half, Arbroath better of second half and a draw would have been a fair reflection but our keeper was bribed by some smokies to throw the match. Stats show it as an even game also.

Na, you must have been one of the Thistle fans chucked oot if you think that was an even game. Stats can mean nothing (even though they are in Arbroath's favour) as our chances were proper goalscoring efforts whereas Thistle's were half chances or speculative, long range hit and hopes.

Well i could admit it had it not been for our keeper selling 2 goals. Like i said before the game i would have taken a draw as it is a hard place to go for anyone. Dunfermline are dross as you will soon find out.

Aside from the two (I would say one) goals your keeper sold, we had by far the lions share of good chances and on another day we could have scored 6. Also, what about your freak goal? (perhaps you couldn't see it from the other end but it was reminiscent of Tommy Boyd v Brazil) Aside from that Gaston barely had anything to do.

Aye we were winning the league, anyone that thought that is as mad as McCall

After your result at Dunfermline (favourites for the title for many, including me), I don't think anyone would have begrudged a bit of optimism in the Thistle support. Can't you just admit that you were well beaten today and that it had more to do with how well Arbroath played as opposed to Thistle being terrible. As I've said before, I love how we're written off by other team's fans, particularly ones that are new to the division.
