You can play a traditional 4 and still have cover. Either the wide players drop back to help. Or your midfield anchor moves across to cover if say Dick has a rush of blood and rampages forward.

We can make our multitude of midfielders work better for us. Just stop playing them at the back.

IMO we look a lot better at the 3atb but the only problem with that in our team is we don’t have the wing backs for it, Connolly and Smith are wingers, Dick doesn’t get forward enough to play that rule and Millen can’t get back if he goes forward, also that formation would work if brown played as an anchor in the MF so he drops in to make a 4 while still maintaining him in the MF

Frustrating day given we could have won but there were plenty positives.

We looked good going forward, much improved compared to the last few weeks.

Vaughan was really good, covered a huge amount of ground, and I think was onside when he was clean through.

The long balls to Hamilton were much less aimless and he did well in the air. Starting to look like a good partnership between him and Vaughan. We also looked good when trying to play decent pasing football.

Atmosphere was better than the last couple of games too.

Byrne had his best game since Tannadice too.

If we keep faith with the boys going forward they will click and we will smash someone. Just need to shore up the defence and we'll be flying.

I thought Connolly and smith done well as wing backs today but the only criticism is have of Connolly was it was criminal completely missing the target when clean through, should’ve kept on going imo

His pinpoint pass let in Hamilton to score. On the second Livi goal he was in a no win situation. The first cross from the attacking right came over and he correctly didn’t jump for it. If he had tried for it, the Livi player beyond would have had a free go. Instead he tracked it out and got stuck one on two with no help, and still made them put in another cross. Brown then jumped for it and when he missed, the Livi player buried the chance.

When the 2nd cross came in for the goal Millen got dragged way out and he did have Connolly behind him covering, I had the perfect view as I was near the front, but my problem with that goal is we don’t stop both crosses coming into the box which is frustrating… I will add it was Eastons slack pass or whatever started the move for the goal but you’ve still got enough people to defend it though

  4. I agree with what people are saying if Corr and Masson isn’t part of Murray’s plans and simply won’t play them do what’s the best for them either let them go or send out on loan rather than sitting on a bench getting next to no minutes.

Jamie Gullan id let go in the summer Murray has been desperate for him back but has rarely started a game and hasn’t done much recently to warrant a start tbh.

the full backs im at the stage where im not really arsed if they left because we can certainly do better.

Byrne is quality but we need a runner next to him as he’s not the most mobile I feel the balance of the team is all over atm.

as I said a few days ago on here we need a leader/organiser at the back as we’ve not really had that since Watsons been out and can we trust him to stay fit after his track record with injuries? We have to get a least 2 in this window in my opinion a FB and a CH not one or the other

Big couple of weeks ahead - its either going to be a case of bringing players in (and adding to an already large squad) or hoping that Murray and Watson can show a consistent run of fitness for 4 months.

Mare chance of keeping a cleansheet than either one of those 2 as consistent partnership for the next 4 months 🤣

Ah well! Disappointing result. Another year, another poor financial return from the Cup, over and above the excitement of progressing to the next round.
Get the feeling that next week is an absolute must win v ICT to get the wheels back on the wagon and turning again. Someone has to take some action to get the defence sorted as the Jan window is slowly creaking closed and will speed up as we get closer to the 31st.

Honestly if we don’t sign a defender or a full back who can actually stop crosses coming in before next week, I fear it might be 4 defeats on the bounce, Caley has recently moved to a 3atb and use there wing backs high and get balls into the box and as we all know that’s our weakness and tbh we never rectified in the summer and I doubt we will this window

Poor from us today but I think we still concede from crosses with a centre half on the pitch, whether it was Murray or Corr. Our main issue again was creating enough good chances and taking those that came to us. Again poor choices in the box got the better of us.

CH is an issue but in my opinion it’s Also down to a big part of the wing backs or Full backs jobs IE Dick or Millen and today Connolly and Smith no one stops the crosses coming in look at the 2nd goal back I was at the right of the boy crossing and had a good view as was down near the front, Millen comes out shows the boy on his strong foot to get the cross in, show him down the line or on his left foot or get tighter to stop the cross we don’t do it like we love to back off and just them cross it, if that’s the case then we need better

He’s out of contract at seasons end.

He delayed signing our offer last year because he was pissed at being stuck on the bench and not loaned out.

He's seen midfielders at FB and CB ahead of him, despite having started several matches the there in the last couple of years, and done fine by all indications.

Sorry, I don’t see anything we can do to our advantage if we’re not going to play the lad. Fair play to him, he’s been upbeat and was very much a team player when he co-broadcast on RaithTV a little while back.

I’m disappointed in IM’s mishandling of Masson, but at this point it’s all water under the bridge and I don’t think anything we do will keep him a Rover…which I also believe we will regret.

Aye I know but I’m saying get him out on loan playing week in week out so it benefits him looking for a move in the summer because if he stays here for the rest of the season he’s going to have next to no game time get him out to a league 2 side get him the game time he needs,  he simply has to play to benefit going forward in his career and he’s not getting that here

I’ve been pondering this one, and I’m wondering why? What’s the point now, if he plays well it just ups his cost to re-sign…he’s probably already inclined not to re-sign because we’ve stuffed him on the bench all season. I think that ship has sailed, and the few pence saved aren’t worth the loss of emergency CB/RB cover from him.

Surely you’d get him out playing to find potential suitors because let’s be real he’s no gonna get a game here unless a mass injury crisis happens and needs must but I can’t see him playing at all long term or short term even so a loan get game time then see if the potential suitors comes in

It's a yes for me Clive. An established centre half who has won this league before and can add experience and guile, along with a threat at set pieces.

It would give us four choices at centre half who have looked solid and would give us a chance to get Masson out on loan.

Plus he’s something else that we’re missing a leader and organiser at the back since Keith’s been out we have not had that for months but all the reasons you’ve listed and what I’ve said it makes sense tbh

  11. I’ve seen people criticising some peoples reactions why? We’ve taken 5 points/15 points dropped 7 points at home against relegation fodder sides while leading at some point in all 3 games…. If you want to win a league title these are the games we should be winning at home.

i get “you can’t win every game” but come on we’re allowed to criticise as well as giving out praise its a part of football

I think we can all see that a lack of quality defensively has been a problem all season.
When the attackers were firing on all cylinders it didn’t matter but now that they’re tired/the opposition have learned how to play us/ they’ve dipped in form the defensive frailties have been exposed.

Just to counter that point but isn’t that upto Murray to try and change it if we’ve become too predictable though? Obviously the players do it on the park but he sets up how we play so surely he can change or the real question is can he change?

A first choice back line and the first goal doesn't happen, they correctly identified that Mullin has no defensive positional sense and exploited it.

The second goal you would like to think doesn't happen, there was no challenging going on at that corner.

The 2nd goal does happen no matter who’s at the back it’s been like this for the past few seasons just can’t defend them and it’s not been rectified

  14. Just now, CountryBumpkin said:

I overall agree here but I do think a first choice back line gives more options at corners than just Hamilton. Having Watson and Murray and Dick attacking the box would cause issues.

Still can’t defend them though even with them 3 there we just seem to concede from corners/balls into the box or free kicks no matter who we have and it’s still not been a problem that’s been fixed

    Updates from Murray’s post-match interview;

Watson and Matthews picked up little niggles at the end of the week, expected to train fully on Monday.
Dabrowski 80-85% fit, performance of McNeil made it an easier decision to rest him.
    Stanton 3-4 weeks away maximum.

Last part end of the season then 👍 Watson was supposed to be a few weeks turned out months

I don't think we were particularly bad today, probably a bit unlucky to lose over the 90 minutes.

I'm not overly convinced that's a different outcome with a first choice backline though.  The real issue is not putting games to bed when we have the ascendancy and have periods when we are controlling possession. That has been a consistent issue all season, and for all the attacking options we have - we don't have enough threat in the box at times.  Some really decent corner kicks and balls in the box, but if Hamilton doesn't make it stick, there isnt much there.

My fear is that we've got what we can out of the current system and personnel as it stands.  We relied heavily on late winners or edging games out, but you don't have a good season by consistently doing that.  If you lose that element to our game, theres a side with bang average form on display.  We've dried up on that front, still haven't been able to make our mark on a complete game, and are starting to throw goals and points away from winning positions.

Certainly not saying that we have suddenly become a bad side, but something does need changed even if we are to finish in 2nd place.  The reaction to that Utd win has been extremely poor, 3 home games against teams in a relegation battle where we have had a lead - and 7 points thrown in the bin.

In an ideal world, in terms of what we need, I think we need another centre forward (too much depends on Hamilton), another Centre half (too much depends on Murray/Watson staying fit) and another full back - as Liam Dick really isnt good enough for anything beyond mid to lower Championship.  We have a huge squad as it is though, so that wont happen.

You say that but if Murray has no faith in Masson/McGill Gullan is hardly playing and Corr is in and out either send on loan and free up wages or just get rid all of them are on short contracts so wouldn’t cost much then get in better and Agree with you with Liam dick we need a vast upgrade he’s not a full back you win a title with

  17. 13 minutes ago, MICMAC said:

Dick being his usual self, put the ball out of play every time he tried to pass it up the line.

I’m at the point now, get rid aye he might be decent defensively but going forward and passing especially he’s extremely poor or just move him CH if need be, he’s not a title winning full back mid table/lower half championship full back at best imo

  18. 8 minutes ago, MICMAC said:

We created more than enough chances today to win that game and their keeper made at least 3 top drawer saves. On another day we could've been up by 3 at half time. Vaughan needs to stop throwing himself to the ground nearly every time someone goes near him, the last 5 or 6 games it has become really noticeable andvit frustrates the fek out of me.

We created more than enough against Arbroath and Ayr to win those games but didn’t from winning positions mind you were just not clinical enough when we lead and only seem to find our shooting boots when things go wrong that’s my frustrations should’ve been out of sight against Arbroath out of Sight against QP today, aye their keeper did make a few good saves but Hamilton twice headered it straight at him if he picked a corner certain goals….

we just have to be a bit more clinical when we do go 1-0 up because the longer it goes and we’ve had a load of chances I fear we might chuck and we did those 2 games I’ve mentioned

In terms of Gullan and Smith I agree. Vaughan had one of those rare instances where he was genuinely shite. After all these years you could make that charge maybe a handful of times.

At the back, I'm less convinced. Suspect if fit Matthews would have been in at right back but it's hardly surprising that someone coming back from that time out would develop other niggles (how often did Vaughan, after every ACL, come back then pull up for a hammy injury for several weeks)

Brown has played plenty at CB. I dont think's particularly different in there from Murray who we recognise as a CB despite his documented faults. Would you rather play Masson who has little experience, or play a couple of guys with a few hundred games under their belts. Perhaps Masson hasnt progressed intraining despite the new deal as well?

For all that, for me - the issues were largely in the final third of the pitch.

I agree with the last part 100% but rather than a Mullin at RB why no give Masson or McGill who’s been reliable for Murray in those positions a run out who more defensively better I would say but I do get all the points you make, I would personally like to see a Fullback/someone who can play either side and another CB come in, it think we need an Ashcroft type in there a b*****d that would win stuff/lead from the back and get us somewhat organised at the back
