We have never dragged the bairns much more than an hour or two but in August we will be doing 4 hours or so to Center Parcs. Both of them are in proper sit up car seats though. What is the guidance on them? I would have probably been aiming for 1 stop unless the wee one kicks off.

It’s not as if just because someone somewhere has decided that it should be 1 hour rather than 2 then that makes it gospel. Just plan a place to stop that’s half way and just play the rest by ear.

I know I was just wondering what the script is with the next stage of seat. I knew about the baby seats and especially not to let them sleep in them for long.

We've done long drives down south to Skegness, only stopping when it's mealtimes or the eldest asks for the toilet or moaned he's uncomfy (the youngest wasn't at talking age at this point). My rule of thumb for sleeping in any position is if they stay asleep they must be comfortable.

If a child sits in a car seat for 2 or 3 hours I can't see a problem, maybe if it was a regular occurence. But for long car journeys on trips etc I don't think there is a problem having them sit for that length of time.

It's just in the first few months when they have no control of their neck. It can create breathing problems.

After posting earlier, Callan fell asleep during baby sensory class and then slept in his car seat for over an hour this afternoon   This is probably as a result of him waking up at 5am to do a gigantic shit.

It's the same with their head and lying the same way all the time. It can cause the skull to shape differently. We have a kid at our English school who has a very odd shaped head because of this (back of his head only thankfully)......It's not had any ill effects on him or his development other than the......deformity, although I'm not sure it can be called that.

My wife is practically incapacitated after breaking a toe, which so far has required two trips to A & E, and may well require another as it is still bleeding. (As she is on blood thinners and has diabetes this complicates matters.)

Unfortunately, we are baby sitting the 3 youngest grand children as their parents are away for a short break. This morning my wife said "Get me the stool to keep my leg up so this stops bleeding", to which the three year old responded by pointing at her granny's foot and saying "Stop bleeding!".

We can but hope.

My 12 y/o isn’t cut from a different cloth to me. At that age if I’d slunk off to my room for an hour it would have been to play a computer game, sniff aerosols or have a look at some scud book I’d found in a bush. She emerges having done stuff like this...

There are nice swimming pools in Edinburgh, you didn’t have to take her into The Forth.

Good one! I was at Ainsley Park, the child’s pool is definitely too cold there so might go elsewhere next time. She was properly exhausted after it and has been asleep since 2.

Sweet - swimming is a great way to pass the time with young kids. If you ever get a car you can take her to pools with flumes etc when she’s a bit bigger (like Perth, Dundee, Dunbar...).

First father's day without the old man. Six months to the day. Been a pretty hard day, my wife took me and the weans out for the afternoon to try and keep my mind off it, but it's been pretty hard.

I think you could be right, throbber. I don’t tend to look terrified or shiver when I’m enjoying myself.

Aye, but with her father she was never going to be a normal child.
