This. There is a lot of things that you can have a go about Locke for. That isn't one There would be absolutely no need for Craig Easton if Locke was at every game..

RoversTV commentary on Saturday said that Coustrain's been suffering a series of niggles. They've basically said that he's struggled to adapt to moving from essentially youth level and not training as often with Sheffield United after being told he was surplus to requirements, to training full time with us. It's why he's disappeared since Ayr at home, and he's hopeful of being back soon and would be optimistic that next season is his year (although, he's only on a one year deal)

Brashy's Boots
Well that's encouraging at least. No doubt Cocke will consider him surplus then.

Over the past 10 years we have really only seen 5 players come through our youth system to become first team players. Callachan, Matthews, Vaughan, Bates and Laidlaw. Yes there have been a few others that have graced the bench but never made any impact whatsoever. Out of those 5 Laidlaw was released and Hibs signed him. Did we offer him a new deal so that we might at least get some sort of development fee? I don't recall we did. Bates has basically been handed on a plate to Rangers for less than a packet of salt and vinegar quavers. Vaughan has been isolated by our esteemed manager and effectively forced out of the club. That leaves only Callachan and Matthews. 10 years and we have 2 of our own developed players in our first team. That is a shocking statistic. The board question why fans aren't putting the money into the Development Fund but there are 2 easy answers. Firstly, there has been very little youth progress made by ourselves. We don't even play in the property Development League but instead the Development League East beside Berwick, Forfar, Stirling, Livi, Alloa and Cowden. We don't see players making the jump from Development to First team and this is highlighted by us not evening listed youth players on the bench but either 5 or 6 subs or 2 keepers. Secondly, the Bates situation. The whole point in developing players is to help both us and them push on and, ultimately when they do leave we make sure we get a good price for them. To let go of our best defensive prospect in years for virtually nothing is a scandal. It gives no confidence to the fans, and anyone paying in, that the club will get a return for the investment being made. A club our size rarely produces quality through our youth system. There halve been a few that have earned us a couple of quid but the only really success that I can recall is Colin Cameron. The development set up is a total and utter waste other time and money.
grumswall
We have several good quality players in our team produced by our own youth system. Callachan, Matthews and Vaughan being the obvious names. We also sold Sean mackie to hibs for roughly 40k last summer based on one sub appearance. Clubs our size? Livingston seem to produce the likes of snodgrass, Dorrans etc. Hamilton aren't really a bigger club than us and have produced Mccarthy, mcarthur etcI could go on but iv made point.

There was a similar discussion on the Queens thread about youth setups. You've named four players who've went on to be very successful, but how long is it since any of them were in a youth setup? Who have those clubs produced since? I would have said if you have three players holding down first team places thats a pretty good return. We had a similar number a couple of seasons ago who have all now moved on to bigger clubs. Currently the players coming through dont look of the same quality. Is that just a cyclical thing or is it an indication of a decline in our youth development? Is it unrealistic to expect a club at our level to produce players every year? I dont really know the answer to any of those questions.

Is it unrealistic to expect a club at our level to produce players every year? I dont really know the answer to any of those questions. There's certainly a degree of cyclical relevance. I do think producing players (plural) every year is very ambitious. A player? Maybe. It also depends what you count as "youth". Do you means someone who has been through Club Academy and been with the club since u16's or are we including boys who may have joined as pros at u20's level. For ourselves for instance Lyndon Dykes was never a youth with us but he's been through the 20's setup for a while and certainly developed as a young player with us. That said, he's older than Jordan Marshall, a terrific young player, who never kicked a ball for us at any youth level and went straight into the first team when we signed him. However, geography is a factor too. We have a lower pool to pick from than Central Belt sides, though a better chance of actually signing up any good locals who come through than Central Belt sides too. Some clubs like Hamilton and Falkirk do focus a lot more time and budget on youth football too which will inevitably lead to some better returns. Falkirk have done tremendously over the last decade actually moving a production line of players on to England even if, Arfield and Kingsley apart, they haven't made it to the very top. Wallace, Murdoch, Fulton, Kingsley, Blair, Biabi, McGrandles (even Ryan Flynn and Kallum Higginbotham, though neither went through their youth setups).
Ding Dang Doo
I see Locke is in the press today using the "tired" excuse for last Saturday now. Yet during that match he took off 2 players (Thomson and Johnston) who came on as subs so couldn't be as tired as the rest surely? It's just another excuse amongst the long line we've heard so far this season.Saturday's one?....Has to be the late kick off time.

Pride of Fife
Tired? What better opportunity to use the large squad at his disposal against Dumbarton, no.... he sticks with the same guys who have been dire for weeks except this time they were dire AND tired. Poor wee souls having to play football for 120mins 3 days before another game
Michael W
It's dreadful the players are tired - must be down to the small squad we have at our disposal. What chance does the team have when the board don't back the manager?
Beachbum
Tiredness wasn't the cause of the defeat against Dumbarton, as we all know. It was their 5 man midfield against our 4. Sam Stanton was a free man for much of the game and out manager didn't spot it or do anything about it. And yet, in the first game against Hearts, Locke did go with a 5 man midfield with Callachan pressing forward to great effect. Let's hope he goes with 4-5-1 tomorrow and that Craig Barr is in there somewhere.
