From The Times:

Rod Liddle: Bad-boy Balotelli shines while on his best behaviour

Despite plenty of provocation from the henchmen in the Stoke defence, City’s enfant terrible showed class in more ways than one

The ITV commentators Clive Tyldesley and Jim Beglin were determined to bury Mario Balotelli before he had so much as kicked a ball or spat at anyone. His inclusion in the Manchester City side was, according to them, an enormous risk that they implied was highly unlikely to pay off, given the chap’s appalling temperament and epic petulance. A little later, as the dismal first half dragged by with all the panache and coherence of John Prescott reciting Waiting for Godot, the Stoke defender Robert Huth showed a rather more literal determination to bury Balotelli. He punched him, hard, in the mouth.

It was one of three separate incidents in the first 45 minutes that should have seen the lumbering German hulk sent from the pitch. But the interesting thing here was Balotelli’s reaction.

He lay down on the ground for a short while clutching his jaw, as you probably would, but then climbed to his feet in a fairly spritely manner and got on with playing the game as if nothing much had happened. He glowered a little towards the referee, but nothing more than that.

It was hugely disappointing, both for me watching at home and indeed for Stoke, who had clearly banked upon Balotelli becoming deranged with fury sooner or later, or simply acting forlorn and distrait, as he has done on previous occasions this season.

Instead, he illuminated the match with a rare and delicate brilliance and was, even more remarkably — because we know he has talent — a model of collegiate responsibility. There was one shocking moment in the second half when he tracked back fully 40 yards and dispossessed Jermaine Pennant (very easily) on the edge of the City penalty area. He then played a short simple pass to a teammate and hared off down the pitch.

That’s not what we expect from our newest and sulkiest enfant terrible; we expect him to flounce and dive and sulk. Pennant, a previous enfant terrible, watched on balefully. He spent most of the match resembling a spider that has half of its legs pulled off, running around in frantic and ever decreasing circles.

He seemed despondent, Pennant, and his usual reliability from free kicks had deserted him. On the other wing Matthew Etherington hopped around on his one good leg until he was humanely dispatched.

Stoke, sad to say, were awful; grim and pointlessly attritional, devoid of wit and — oddest of all — too easily muscled off the ball by the likes of Nigel de Jong and Yaya Toure. The gap between the sides seemed much larger than the league table would suggest.

You wonder what would happen if Roberto Mancini were able to persuade his hubristic collection of individuals to play in such a manner most weeks of the year, rather than only when royalty are watching. This has been their problem.

But yesterday De Jong was near flawless and Tevez as incisive as ever despite not being properly match fit — but the star of the show was Balotelli. He has that ability to create acres of room for his teammates with one deft flick of the boot. If there is any criticism to be made of his performance it is that he was insufficiently selfish near the goal. If Tevez is struggling then Manchester City struggle to score too, and yesterday David Silva was a forlorn figure, the one City player who seemed incapable of rising to the occasion.

Balotelli is still just 20 years old and of late has been delivering statements of something close to sentience to the media. Some of the dumb braggadocio, the sort of rubbish that has seen him fall out with almost everybody who has had custody of him, and especially Jose Mourinho, seems to have disappeared.

There has even been the intimation of humility in his acceptance that sometimes he has been trouble. And there was a certain rather rough humility in his comments immediately after his side had been presented with the cup.

“My season has been s***,” he said, and added: “But maybe today I play a little more for the team.” Yes, exactly. It ought to be pointed out that he didn’t say he was going to continue playing for the team, but it seems that a certain realisation has dawned upon him.

Nor has his season been what most normal people would describe as “s***”. Ten goals from just 28 appearances in league, cup and Europe has given him a goals per game ratio rather better than, say, Didier Drogba. If he and Mancini are still at Eastlands next season you might expect him to be in the top two or three of leading Premier League scorers. Unless he suffers a psychotic relapse.

Whatever, one was grateful for him yesterday. FA Cup finals are often played as if the boots were weighted with tungsten and yesterday’s was worse than most.

The media are finally cutting him some slack, he was brilliant yesterday and deserves all the praise he gets. A big part in them winning their first trophy.

Beglin and Tyldesley looking like tits is, however, not surprising.

Even more hilarious antics from City's young player of the year.

His antics do split between the inspired and idiotic, this is very much in the latter category.

Still, young player of the season in his debut season for a team that finished third in the league? It shows how well has adapted and that the fans are very happy with his contribution on the pitch. It's been a good season for Balotelli all round, and I think there is still a lot more to come from him.

Guilty Pleasue: Balotelli

Of that I have little doubt. So long as he isn't playing up front that is. The closing stage of the season just went to show what he can be capable of when he isn't being Kris Boyd v2.0.

Rangers fans : Consistently witless.

Yeah, he actually played a lot better towards the end of the season even when he wasn't scoring goals. Dropping deep, using his skill and physique to run at defences and getting balls in the box. He does have the capacity to score goals, and his record this season is far from bad but I'm not convinced his future is as an out and out striker, more a forward really.

Can't see what the fuss is about. He tried a back heel in a friendly when he (apparently) thought he was offside having already scored a penalty.

Whoop-dee-doo as the kids say. Think he's going to have a very good season if he manages to stay fit.

He wasn't nearly offside and it's not as if he was shocked when he knew he wasn't offside  Maybe it would be acceptable if they were a couple of goals up and cruising but not when the team is only hanging on to a 1-0 lead.

Edin Dzeko's reaction said it all
