That wee boy looks like he's a puppet controlled by strings and somebody is tugging at his right arm. Either that or he's leaning on an invisible box.

Depending what season you're talking, if it was a shoot-out that might be correct: if the ball has come away from the goal, it couldn't go back in off the goalkeeper (or the referee / assistants though that would take some kick).

A kick is successful if, having been touched once by the kicker, the ball crosses the goal line between the goal posts and under the crossbar, without touching any player, official, or outside agent other than the defending goalkeeper. The ball may touch the goalkeeper, goal posts, or crossbar any number of times before going into the goal as long as the referee believes the ball's motion is the result of the initial kick. This was clarified after an incident in the 1986 World Cup shoot-out between Brazil and France. Bruno Bellone's kick rebounded out off the post, hit goalkeeper Carlos's back, and subsequently bounced into the goal. Referee Ioan Igna gave the goal to France, and Brazil captain Edinho was booked for protesting that the kick should have been considered a miss as soon as it rebounded off the post. In 1987, the International Football Association Board clarified Law 14, covering penalty kicks, to support Igna's decision.

Wait.

You said that, in shootouts, the ball cannot come off the post, hit the goalie and then go in. Bu that's what the ref allowed in that shootout, and in the last sentence, the IFAB agreed he was right!

That's a contradiction, unless your initial statement refers to the current situation, which must have seen a reversal of the 1987 decision?

Looks more like the walloper with the trophy almost clobbered him on the napper, probably about to elbow him in the nuts in retaliation.

The Sixes was a brilliant tournament and one that, during its time at Falkirk, drew some serious competition from the top teams. It should be back in some way but with the way things are nowadays I would doubt it would be anywhere near as exciting as it was. No chance the top teams would risk their players in it. It was looked upon as a serious tournament in its own right. Bring it back.

Actually intrigued with this now.

Have to say if I was watching a shoot out I'd assume a kick that hit the bar/post, the keeper then went in would be a goal?

It was a good laugh that wee tournament, for the record here's the past winners (taken from Wiki)

And unlike Aberdeen & Celtic we haven't awarded ourselves a star on our shirt for each win

Did anyone ever get a serious injury at the Sixes?

Can't imagine managers would be too keen on it now in the days of cotton wool footballers.

To answer a 2 and a half year old question - yes! Davie Cooper got a fucking *carpet burn* that kept him out for a few games - IIRC, he missed a game at Parkhead because of it :)

He's probably relishing that occasion now, the lucky wee sod!

In the very first season why did Motherwell progress to the semi's and not St Mirren?

I am assuming you mean St. Johnstone - because both they and Motherwell finished on two points and 5-5 goal record.

Well - wouldn't you know it - the tie-breaker in such instances was the side which had scored earliest in their opening match would progress.

Motherwell scored within the first minute of their match with St Mirren - whilst St Johnstone didn't open their account until two minutes plus v Rangers.

Maybe we could use this system in the Euro groups?

I like to think of Ian poring over old newspaper articles all these years until finally, earlier this evening, he managed to solve the great enigma of why Motherwell progressed at the expense of St Johnstone in the Tenents Sixes, and felt he had to share it right away.
