I'm amazed they managed to get him tried, he is certifiable - hears voices, thinks people are hiding in the walls, denies he's Muslim one day, recites the Koran the next. I was having this conversation the other day, I find it quite interesting that someone like that can be tried as sane, however there was no way he was ever going to be declared insane in the circumstances around the case. The point was diminished somewhat because I couldn't think of a real-life example, but take, for example the killer in the film Se7en: claims he kills because God talks to him and tells him to, claims he is a messenger from God punishing people for their sins. Everyone's first thought when they hear that is 'this guy is batshit mental', that they are clearly insane. However, when you hear someone saying they kill because Allah tells them to, while people do obviously think they are batshit mental, the first thought is not that this person is insane but that they are a terrorist. I'm not sure if that says more about the nature of fundamentalist terrorism or our attitude to it, to be honest: obviously, if we were to declare insane everyone who commits a crime and claims they've done it because a supreme being told them to we're leaving religious terrorists with a judicial get out clause, but it's hard to escape the impression that Adebolajo is genuinely utterly insane. The ones who joined the Republican side are regarded as heroes to the Left even now, despite the fact that the Republicans pretty well matched Franco's mob in brutality, and they spent more time fighting each other (Anarchists, Socialists, Communists (Stalinist section), Communist (other) etc. than fighting Franco. The volunteers probably managed to extend the war and killings by a few days or weeks. The last thing you need in a civil war is more people and guns. I said we should build a prison in somalia and send our violent prisoners there. WE could guarantee the prison guards got paid more for less risk than the Somalians forced into piracy through poverty and we could guarantee a lower cost to the taxpayer in the UK for putting people in prison. In the cases of the jihadist micks, they'd probably rather be in somalia anyway. So why don't you explain to everyone how your solution is better? Dear God, hopefully your not even remotely serious. If you are. you are seriously not in touch with the real world. It would be quite a challenge to counter such a ridiculous proposal.
