The RSPB omitted the Shag from their 1967-1972 Birds of Britain publications due to what they deemed to be too explicit a double meaning for a family book.

Also, 'oil' is only a relatively recent term which first appeared during the Victorian period, originally being an acronym for 'organic industrial lubricant'. It was soon applied to all petroleum products used within the factories and eventually beyond to include its crude source.

Nicaragua is a made-up place.

Just the mention of Nicaragua reminds me of the Truman Show. Fiji saw almost a 100% rise in tourism in 1998 following the release of the film. Most of these were Americans which in turn heavily damaged the Hawaiian tourist trade in their home country.

The Truman Show was originally to be filmed in French Polynesia but the pilot got lost and landed in Fiji instead.

The initial cast of Jim Carrey and Laura Linney were originally still going to play the husband and wife of the Truman family but with the wife 'Meryl' being the star of the TV show. The idea was that as a lesser known actress, it would make the story involving a random woman more believable.

However, at relatively short notice, it was decided that the film would be more successful if Carrey played the leading role, resulting in the main character becoming male and 'Truman' having to become the strange first name of the main character rather than the more common surname in order to keep the already decided film title. Carrey and Linney therefore reversed roles and had to play each other's lines which they knew anyway.

The Edinburgh Corporation were the first council body in Europe to establish a no ball games zone in a public park. The sign was erected in Princes Street Gardens in 1951 after a football landed on the adjacent railway line and a teenager attempted to retrieve it.

The TV quiz Only Connect was originally a spoof programme in a Fry & Laurie sketch, in which Pamela Stephenson played its intellectual presenter.

Decades later BBC Director General Mark Thompson, informed that shows like "The Weakest Link" and "Mastermind" were going out of fashion and pressured into creating fresh, high-brow programming, saw the sketch and stole its basic idea. Thompson and his close friend Victoria Coren worked on it, and Coren was so passionate about presenting the quiz herself that she offered to host free of charge, which she did until Thompson's exit as Director-General in 2012.
