For highlights, the only mics are with the cameras. Normally there would be a camera and mic high behind the goal, but for some reason when matches have Alba highlights they have two at the half-way line and that's it.

Live games are different, with pitchside mics.

Christ its pretty poor. Made it sound as if no one was in the stadium. Surely it wouldn't cost too much to stick a mic behind each goal?

At risk of filling the thread with boring technical claptrap, there's two ways of covering games - a proper outside broadcast and ENG (Electronic News Gathering).

The former is what's done for live games and what Alba used to have until this season. Multiple cameras at multiple angles and pitchside mics. Everything is fed into two or more trucks and sent via satellite to the broadcasters. The latter is what most games have for highlights. Two or three cameras that either have tapes, or being fed to a single satellite van in a setup no different to when there's a live report on the news.

Then, of course, commentary is dubbed on afterwards. If the audio quality doesn't make the obvious, the fact that the commentator is usually whomever was there for Sportsound is the giveaway.

Compare and contrast to MOTD, which has full OB's and "live" commentary for every game. But then that's because the EPL have it written into the TV contract that the rights holders will make sure this happens and they get away with it because they know they have the TV companies over a barrel. Up here the dynamic is different - we do the jumping on the broadcasters' demand.

On Sportsound last night they were discussing how many would be interested in the vacant Motherwell job. Willie Millar's contribution went something like this " People are very aware that manager jobs in Scottish football do not pay well. They also know that there will be virtually no money to spend on players when they get the position. So, yes, there will be a long line of people who will be applying for the Motherwell job."

Sometimes it's better not to listen too closely to what these pundits say....they are idiots!!

Can we use this for Sportsound listen, too?

I turned on the radio on my drive to the game to hear the team lines. Robbo was asked how he thought County would shape up.

Given that:

a) County have used a 4-2-3-1 (or, pedantically, a similar looking 4-4-1-1 against Celtic and ICT) shape almost exclusively since McIntyre took the job;

b) The team was the exact same from the St Mirren game apart from one change, Martin Woods coming in from Richard Brittain, you'd think it would have been easy to predict.

Robbo went 4-1-4-1 with a number of different solutions, wrapping himself with variables that didn't make sense.

He actually guessed right with the 4-1-4-1, but it seemed to me a lucky guess, given that County hadn't used that at home since Adams was in charge, that Robbo had Darren Barr in the wrong position, Paul Quinn (a centre-back) in midfield and Martin Woods (an attacking centre mid) as a centre-back. His role on the radio is effectively as the expert on the teams in the Highlands, so I can't fathom how he can get away without doing a couple of minutes' research before being asked the question.
