Ludo*1
Big Milton has turned into the Hibs or Tottenham of storms. Hyped up to be the worst of all time, make a name for itself, write itself into history then absolutely shite the bed when it hit Florida. Obviously glad it did but it seems that Helene a few weeks ago did a lot more damage.

In all seriousness, I'm obviously being a bit tongue in cheek here. Just that it was being painted out to be the worst storm ever, do more damage than Katrina did in 05 and be like something we humans have never seen before. Delighted it's not turned out that way - just poking a little bit of dark fun at an overall still horrendous situation.

RH33
Friends in Florida had just had their condo on Captovoa Island completed after Hurricane Ian(?) destroyed it couple years ago. Islands cut off again and no word on damage. They're home more to west and seem to have missed the worst. We moan about the weather here but at least we don't have these extremes.

It juked south of Tampa Bay, and that dropped the projected storm surge for the actual Bay by about 8-10 feet. The barrier islands got trashed, Siesta Key looks to be a near redo, the structures generally survived, but the interiors will have to be completely torn out and redone. Lots of tornado damage to the east and south of Orlando, and a pretty significant number of people now homeless. Still a pretty bad storm, but thankfully weakened and turned.

velo army
Florida always struck me as uninhabitable. Boiling in summer and apocalyptically gusty in Autumn. I get why people may have to move there from other states (or from Puerto Rico/Dom Rep)or have been there for generations, but Brits living there seems like a Faustian pact. You get sunny weather, laughably low taxes and good wages (or little to no tax on your UK private pension if you're a retiree) but every couple of years you get entered into an elemental lottery to win a once in a lifetime (truly) holiday to the Emerald City.
