British Xmas TV

According to you maybe, but millions have watched some of the dramas that the BBC have produced recently, which have been pretty good efforts for the most part. Series 2 of Broadchurch is on the way with big hype too, since the first one is very good. Utopia was excellent recently, as was Babylon.

Utopia is another one being remade for US TV btw. By David Fincher though, which makes me happy.

Our biggest success? Its TopGear: racists and cars. That's the sad truth mate.

Worth noting that there ARE exceptions to the rule in the US, with Sherlock and Downton Abbey doing pretty well over there. But the majority of the time, there's the need for a remake, with Broadchurch being the newest example.

I think the shows (and films like James Bond) from here which evoke a certain image of England do well in American audiences. It's the more mundane normal series like The Inbetweeners, Skins or The Office which need translation for a US audience.

Thing with The Office is it didn't really work in America at first even when remade. They had to massively tone down the awkwardness and bring in a more comfortable form of comedy before it seemed to take off. First series (first episode in particular) of the US office makes it seem very similar to the UK version, but series 2 onwards have that feel that American comedies tend to have.

State of Play, Edge of Darkness and House of Cards have all been remade in the States. All were fantastic BBC dramas that didn't quite hit it off across the pond in my opinion. So far they haven't taken up the option they have on Take The High Road. So far.

The Outlander premiere broke ratings records for Starz when it premiered in the U.S. and was quickly renewed. It's premiered in Canada, Australia, Denmark, Japan, and has distribution deals with a number of other countries. It'll even air in Ireland this month. It's a show that Visit Scotland is using to market the country as a vacation spot/ And yet, there's been no word on the show making to British airwaves. Why is that?

If you ask some people, the reason is that Outlander has been so conspicuously absent from the place in which it's set has to do with the referendum on Scottish independence. One of the major plotpoints of the book, and the show, is that it's set around the Jacobite rising of 1745. And its portrayal of British officers in Scotland at that time has them as dandies at best and sociopathic at worst. Last week even had our English heroine expressing sympathies for the Scottish cause.
