Interesting to see the Scottish Libertarian Party turning up - unless this was a member of the English party who decided to stand (the Libertarian Party UK - LPUK - which covers England, Wales and Cornwall) in the SLP's patch. A complete political irrelevence, but used to have some interesting nutters (sometimes in a WTF sort of way) such as Old Holborn & Obnoxio The Clown back in the day.

Labour's doom continues - not so sure about whether the Tories simply picked up what would have been the LibDem & UKIP votes.

Scottish Libertarian Party apparently, for all that it matters.  They garnered a haul of 53 votes.

Turnout only 26.6%, pretty poor even for a council election.

On the face of it that suggest a large number of previous Labour voters changing their vote to Tory.  That is shocking and sad.
There could, of course, be other explanations.

The other option is simply that Labour voters didn't bother turning out while the Tories were able to generate more enthusiasm amongst their natural support than last time out.

Tory supporters tend to come out in all weathers for any old election, which is what often makes it so hard to get rid of them.

I've checked and the actual turnout was down by a third
SNP: 1,461, Down by 609 (-29%)
LAB: 881,  Down by 1,157 (-57%)
CON: 602, Up by 276 (+85%)

So even if we assume that the rise in the Tory vote was entirely composed of former labour voters there would still be three times as many Labour voters that didn't bother voting

On the plus side, Labour continue to die in tremendously pleasing fashion.

I see Labour up here are back trying to play the staunch card again, but that ship has sailed with the Tories. They'd probably be better playing the federalism/Devo max card.

Labour really don't know what the f**k they are all about these days. Down South and up here they are a total and utter shambles. Looks like the Tories will have plenty time in power at Westminster to totally f**k the country up.

Dugdale is so fucking thick that if a strategist pointed out the worst possible route to go down she'd follow it like a puppy chasing a stick.

I doubt she'd rise beyond the level of local Councillor in any of the other parties.

The federalism ship sailed a long time ago as well - Labour are naturally centralisers - they don't really believe in having power at the lowest level possible.

But they can't KEEP playing it. They played it during Indyref and then as good as blocked it during the Smith Commission. Now they're back saying 'Devo Max' again. Who on earth is listening now?

Besides, hard to argue the merits of 'devo max' when you're being told to suck it up because Brexit was a 'UK-wide referendum'.

Their problem is that they didn't really believe in devolution in the first place, since they were the party of post-war nationalization that strengthened the British dimesion and weakened Scottish adminstrative autonomy, so when they had the chance to define the new status quo in coalition with the Lib Dems they had no idea what to do with the new parliament and the levers of power they had been handed, because they instinctively treated it as a slightly souped up local council rather than a national parliament and that wasn't what Yes Yes voters thought they had voted for.

Nobody is listening to them. That's their problem. However, in time that could change if they decide what they actually believe in and then stick to their beliefs and keep reiterating them over and over. Having a few decent policies, and being able to articulate these, wouldn't hurt either.

Dugdale and Corbyn would have to go too and be replaced with competent leaders.

Eventually people may listen again. Even at that I expect that Labour down South will only get in again when people are properly fed up with the Tories.

Predictions for today's by-elections?

Stoke - Narrow labour hold
Copeland - Conservative gain.

Bookies agree unfortunately, both 4/9 favourites, at best.
