It would have been better for him if Brexit had won. A hard Brexit isn't quite as popular as he's been making out, even in a constituency that voted over 60% to Leave.
Torys still got 7k+ votes, add them together with the brexit party, thats a decent chunk. If May hadn't stood down couple of weeks back then Brexit party would probably have won that seat. The thought of a Boris Johnson coming into power probably prevented more Torys protesting and voting Brexit party.
Nothing has really changed tbh. That's not a bad result for the Brexit party, as it will make Torys go harder and help Corbyn deflect from a second referendum.

It's a great result for Labour, with the hard Brexit vote split down the middle, and the Lib Dems not taking as many votes off Labour as expected.

Nobody is denying it's not a good result for Labour, but it's certainly not a bad result for the Brexit party, as per my post above. Brexit party just want to see Brexit and that result last night enhances that due to the reasons outlined, and the fact the lib Dems didn't do well

I would be amazed if it's a ceiling for the Brexit Party but who knows. What is clear is that the hard Remain lot are fucking devastated that Labour didn't lose their seat yesterday.

If you analyse the results, and yes it's just a by-election 3 things stand out.

1. I'd be surprised if Brexit Party had not won the seat if the Torys hadn't ditched May.
2. It's pretty clear which way the Torys must go if they are to be a power again. Hard Brexit.
3. Lib Dems didn't do as well as expected, so it puts less pressure on Labour to call for a second referendum.

Brexit party just want to see Brexit, ironically last night's results play for them, but fair play to Labour in taking seat.

The BBC and the media at large are doing their best to remove the ceiling by having Farage on everywhere to discuss his thoughts on the result. Maybe they should ask Forbes or someone who was actually involved in winning the seat.

If the Tories copy the Brexit Party in going full on for No Deal they'll be fighting for a share of maybe 30% of the electorate max. Labour and the Lib Dems will clean up.

It's a bloody awful result for Continuity UKIP.

A seat that was 60%+ Leave just two weeks after a good set of Euro elections should have been a shoe-in for them.

They were 1/6 to win the seat.

Perhaps it's telling that many Brexit voters are not one issue voters either.

It may also be the case that many who were previously Leave have either shifted into the Remain camp or are undecided.

To win only 29% share of the vote meant they didn't even get half of the potential Leave voters.

Nonsense, the reason why Brexit Party didn't win was simply down to not enough Tory voters shifting because they know a hard brexiteer will be PM because May has been kicked out. Unfortunately last night's results furthers the case to leave by end Oct.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the news of Ford Bridgend closing down coming out on the day of the election might have swung it. It may have been a different story if that was announced today.

For clarity, I've absolutely no evidence for this. Is there any large manufacturing employers in that area that may be similarly under threat?

ETA: and what do you know, 2,500 employed at an engine factory...

I don't think it's rocket surgery to work out where the Tories are headed. Farage may be a serial failure, but he's most certainly personally responsible for driving the Tories further and further to the right.

Good news for all decent people, as a no-deal Brexit (if the Tories were to support that) would be political suicide and would see them marginalised.

The nutcases of the Brexit Party have had their bubble well and truly burst though, no matter how many photo opportunities the media give Farage.
