Andy Murray The Greatest and General Tennis Chat

The boy wasn't aiming for the umpire, but that is irrelevant.  Once you touch a line judge or umpire you are defaulted.  Djokovic had a game penalty in his last match against Murray, for hitting the ball on purpose into his box.

An umpire in a woman's match last year absolutely bottled defaulting a player when she flung her racquet and it hit a line judge.  Nalbandian, Henman, Tarango and McEnroe have all been defaulted in the past.

Andy Murray was very close to being defaulted in Cincinatti last year, when he volleyed a tennis ball and it whizzed past the umpire.  If it hit the umpire he would have been defaulted.  As well as fines, possible bans and loss of prize money you would also lose all ranking points earned at the tournament.

Yup, that was an absolute beauty as well. I remember howling at the umpires reaction.

I watched the Henman and the Nalbandian clips on youtube earlier. Nalbandian got frustrated and kicked out at an advertising board and there was an old guy sitting behind it who got a right sore one and a bleeding knee.

That Andy Murray clip is quite funny.

Serena not defaulted a few years back in the US Open for having a meltdown at the line judge? Or was that just a game concession?

She was given a point penalty when match point down for going on a swearing tirade against a line judge.

He smashed through the fronting of the line judge's chair - while leading, btw! - and gashed the official's shin.

The rule seems fair enough but if a player is stretching and going all out for a shot, but accidentally slices it and it hits the umpire it's pretty harsh if that's a disqualification.

That wouldn't be though, since they are playing a legitimate shot. The penalty is for when the ball is hit in anger after the point is over.

Ah OK, I was under the assumption it was hitting an official that was the offence, although in retrospect that was a silly assumption to make as any player who can hit the ball really hard runs a pretty high chance of hitting somebody at some point.

There would be a default in nearly every men's match at Wimbledon due to the number of Line Judges getting scudded by serves!

Andy announced the line up for his Andy Murray Live event this November, this year he has managed to get Roger Federer to take part. Will have to seriously consider going this year, not everyday you get the chance to see two of the best in the world playing on your own doorstep.
