Andy Murray The Greatest and General Tennis Chat

Good tournament from Andy really. The fear was he’d go out in the first or second round, and he got tested in both. Going out in the third round was about par.
He was always going to struggle against one of the up and coming guys and it’s no surprise he’s lost in straight sets. Shapolavov is not going to win Wimbledon this year, but he’s levels above Murray at the moment.
Question for Andy now is if he’s happy to push his body to the limit to be a jobbing tour pro that goes home in the first week of majors.
If he is he could probably do that for another few years. If not, he should wrap it now. Because he’s not getting back to the top again, his body is too far gone.

If that's to be Murray's final match on centre it'd be a shame as he deserves a real scrap rather than have someone who is clearly levels above him now. It'd be terrific to see him continue but on the showings of this week I think top 50 is possible, top 30 very unlikely. He just won't get deep enough into tournaments without running into a top 30 player to get any higher I fear.

Going from his interview after the first round, I don’t think he just loves competing. I don’t want to say he doesn’t care about winning or losing, as he obviously does, but if his level turns out to be him being a jobbing tour pro I think he would take that as long as he is out on court.

I think the only reason he calls it quits is if his body can’t take it anymore.

He's obviously the best Scottish sportsperson of all time.  That's not up for debate.  People who champion Hoy, Hendry, Dalglish etc are confirmed morons.

There's definitely grounds for him be best British sportsperson of all time too.  To achieve what he's done in the golden era of tennis is ridiculous.  No other British sportsperson has been under as much pressure and scrutiny as him, whilst having to deal with the 3 greatest male players ever in his sport.

I would make a case for Mo Farah if it weren't for the fact that 1) he may or may not have been doped to the eyeballs and 2) it's just running.

Going by his interviews that's definitely how he feels now. I think he's worked so ridiculously hard over the past 4 years that it's all just a relief to be competitive at all. He lost heavily to the world 12 and 9, but apart from a wobble he hammered the world number 29. I think he'll enjoy winning a match or two at tournaments and maybe he'll take a scalp at some point.

But I wonder how long that would be enough for him. It must be so frustrating not being able to do what he could before.

Yeah, that’s a good point. I think you can see that already. He was getting very frustrated/angry when he played shots that he used to be able to pull off but can’t anymore. Maybe it’s down to not playing a lot and some of it will come back to him or it could be that he just can’t do it anymore.

Yeah, his post-match comments in The Grauniad suggest, to me anyway, if he can't play his way back into being a contender again then he'll be looking to wind down and retire.
