Bishop Briggs
1 hour ago, Sooky said: Lib Dems have already selected prospective parliamentary candidates in the event of an early election, so they have someone else to fight the seat. Conservatives have ruled out standing a candidate. Why risk getting a LD in when they could have an independent who will vote with the Tories on most issues? Also, the local Tory association have backed him, so it would be extremely awkward if we did stand a candidate. Selected PPCs can be ditched by their party if there is a by-election. Not all candidates can take the time off to fight a by-election. Cable has refused to rule out standing. Goldsmith, in practice, "owns" his local association. When the seat was held by the Lib Dems, he did not apply initially. For some "strange" reason, the selection process was halted. Goldsmith had it sewn up when the process was restarted. Much will depend upon whether Conservative HQ decides to support Goldsmith as an "independent Conservative". His Mayoral campaign was a spectacular failure. That support is not guaranteed, especially as May & Co have an aversion to rich Old Etonians, especially those living off huge trust funds.
strichener
So why is it being supported by the Scottish Government? No idea, perhaps they promised to bar flights between Heathrow and Glasgow and only allow them from Prestwick?Or perhaps it was down to the previously mentioned financial inducement from HAL.Longer term, concentrating flights from a massive airport in the SE England will not benefit Scotland.

Um, yes? What's your point? Was it perchance that this was the reason for the piss poor far right vote? If so, compare with the Haltemprice & Howden by election of 2008, where Labour, the Lib Dems, UKIP & the BNP all refused to stand candidates (in the last three cases because they agreed with David Davis' stance on the erosion of civil liberties which was the reason for calling the by-election in protest) - yet the percentage turnout was 34% (as opposed to merely 25% for Batley & Spen) despite being not merely a less "emotive" by-election but indeed one which the Labour Party were all but encouraging people to boycott as a waste of time & public money. On this occasion in terms of the vote & their percentage the NF for example did miles better: 544 or 2.3%, & with a far more obscure candidate (nit-nurse Tess Culnane) even by far-right standards than Edmonds (87 & 0.4%!) Nope - they're f**ked!
