Motherwell FC - A Thread For All Seasons

Steven Lawless somehow managing to, unchallenged, head the ball down onto his own nose, down his own leg and roll it off his toe and out the park from 5yds out was a special moment.

What are the chances of us getting these 4/5 first team quality additions in for the Hibs game? I’d say zero. Which means we’re looking at going with what we have and even if everyone is fully fit, it’s still not going to be good enough. Questions will need to be asked and better still, actually answered, as to why these glaring holes in the team remain, especially having had so long to identify and pursue our preferred options. From where you I’m  sitting this is borderline negligent and for all the club do so much right, this has got to be the most important aspect.

For the record, as it stands, I’d say our best centre half pairing is Mugabi and O’Hara. I’ll just name names as everyone else has, but Lamie and Crawford can be nowhere near the starting 11 as that will see us relegated. I’d play myself before either of them.

The fans being allowed back in means there is going to be no hiding place for the under performers like there was last season.

Well I think we can rule out getting past the group stage. Airdrieonians only need to win assuming we don't win by 3 goals better (your having a laught with that). There are 6 groups (including ours) where 2nd place can get 9 points or higher. They also all have a positive goal difference with 3 of them having a plus 4 goal difference.

Basically we have to hope that Queen of the South stop Airdrie from winning and we win to get through. What a load of shite this team has shown over the past 2 weeks. Absolutley now attacking presence untill we go 2 goals down....

I'm not going to get too ahead of myself given some of our previous league cup performances (Edinburgh City, Stranraer) but that was absolutely hopeless last night. Up there with the worst of last season.

I liked GA when he came in, and still think he'll come good, but that post match interview last night was like listening to Robinson at his worst last season with the 'earning the right to play' patter and questioning the mindset etc.

As virtually everyone on this thread has said, if we start the season with any of that midfield 3 then we are doomed. Hopefully Donnelly's knees hold together as I think he's good enough, and Mark O'Hara returns from wherever he is at the minute - he might not be a world beater but he's also not Robbie Crawford.

As other have said, the holes in the squad are glaring! We need a minimum 2 starters in midfield with some degree of creativity and the ability to progress the ball/break the lines (or 3 CM's with a rotation player). At the back we need a new starting centre back at the least. I've been quite impressed with O'Connor so far and could live with one of O'Connor/Mugabi/O'Hara partnering a new dominant CB if it means we can overhaul the midfield.

If we see some key signings by the middle of next week then some of my concerns might be eased slightly (the rumour mill has gone very quiet?) but given the league season starts in 10 days it looks like we'll be nowhere near ready come the Hibs game.

Normally, I'd be urging that we don't lose the plot at a pre-season LC game - but last night was genuinely woeful (even though it was good to be at a game again).

McGinley, who I always quite liked the look of on a laptop screen had one of the worst 90 minutes I've ever seen from a 'Well player - ditto Crawford.

Still, if what I overheard last night is true, our search for a centre half could be finnished.

It's absolutely nuts that I don't particularly rate Mark O'Hara - but at the moment I think he's simultaneously our best centre half and centre mid.

When I was watching the 20th half-arsed "tackle" in midfield last night - I was feeling the loss of Wee Al more than anything and it could well be a recurring theme...but agree that O'Hara would be an upgrade on what was on show...

On a similar note I never thought Charlie Dunne was any use other than beside someone that could carry him, and yet right now I'm absolutely pining for him.

Hibs - Home
St Johnstone - Away
Livingston - Away
Dundee - Home
Rangers - Away

Where are the points coming from. Hibs, St Johnstone and Rangers will hammer us on current squad/form. Livi is another trip to a pitch that we rarely play particularly well on. Leaves that Dundee game being a huge game for Alexander or the knifes will be out.

Crawford (and Mugabi to a certain extend) being given new contract months ago was a joke. Doubt these guys would have been in demand and should have been keeping our own options open. Crawford is so far out his depth that it’s tough to think of many worse who have played double figures of matches for us. Lamie is another who is not good enough at this level.

Massive few weeks for Alexander as I think a sticky start to the league will see the fans turn on him. At best, we are looking at shitfesting our way through the season and doubt I’ve got it in my to sit through that pish every week.

I would take Sami Hyypia’s old dear over Lamie

Hopefully the rumours some have heard re. a new centre half incoming are true, and it's some big , hard, commanding b*****d who can marshall a back line.

Unfortunately, the fact that he's been used in a lot of the socials/kit unveilings etc, and some of the soundbites recently, I think the club seem to be trying to build Lamie a bit of a profile/bond with the support, and he will start as the preferred option to partner the new guy.

Hope to f**k I'm wrong like, but got a bad feeling that's how we'll start.

I'm holding out some hope that media guy in charge of the photos was late to the meeting for the away kit, walked in just as someone said "shite Livi cast-off", and picked them up wrong.

I'm not saying Ash Taylor is the second coming of Cannavaro or anything but the fact we were in for him reassures me a bit as it surely means we're still in the market for a first choice centre back. I'm more concerned about us not being linked to any central midfielders apart from the boy McCormick as far as I can remember.

Been pilloried elsewhere for similar comment. He’s neither our best central midfielder or centre half.

Competent display on right side of a back 3 before reverting to type last season.
