Motherwell FC - A Thread For All Seasons

Recommended Posts

I'll disagree and agree with Busta.

Attending the end of season awards when Kelly won the player's POTY award, I was more than happy to join in the with the standing ovation he got.  He was easily the best player in the team and kept us up in 20-21.

Stevie Woods was a decent shot-stopper, but shite at going for crosses,  if my selective / crap memory is right.   Definitely not the worst we've had.

Meldrum was shit, but Samson *repeatedly* parrying the ball straight at onrushing forwards had my blood pressure up at fire hydrant levels.

Still fucking raging watching this:

I see your point, however, Heneghen absolutely cementing Shinnie here is a thing of beauty.

I would agree Samson is the worst goalie we've actively made first choice.

Samson parrying the ball straight out for both the shot that led to the penalty and the penalty itself is fucking hilarious

Samson was the worst for me, his constant parrying into the 6 yard box drove me nuts, and he was only #1 cos he hung about the place long enough.

Liam Kelly isn’t anywhere near that bad. He’s an average-to-good SPFL Premiership keeper. He’s not an international level player, but it’s not his fault he keeps getting picked, I guess. Our media team obsession with him getting in the Scotland squad was a bit much, but I accept that was probably part of a plan to raise his profile and make a profit selling him on (which won’t be happening).

No arguments that he’s been utter dugshite the last month though.

Kelly’s not been great, but far from worst. I can go back as far as Cammy Duncan for worse goalies. Most recently worst was that big Chapman bloke. Stevie Woods was just awful, but now, ironically, is meant to be a good goalie coach at Celtic 🤔

I was part of @Busta Nut's debate this morning and it was mainly centred around first choice goalkeepers. Whilst Chapman is probably the worst, he was signed on an emergency basis at a different time and was never intended to feature. Based on the overall damage done, Samson is the worst for me. It's already been mentioned about his parrying back into danger zones.

I remember Stevie Woods keeping Goram on the bench for a spell as @ropymentions, but I also remember it coming to a crashing end when he rattled a free kick off Scott Leitch's heel when he was facing the other way, gifting Kilmarnock a winner.

Woods was probably at the club long enough for people to remember extremes one way or another. I tend to remember him as a keeper who could be solid all game then do something very daft. Although it was between the ages of 7 - 13 I saw him, so I'm perhaps not the best judge. It does seem surreal that a keeper could lose the number one slot five different times at a club.

Chapman is the worst, btw, by absolute fucking miles and miles.

c**t played like he didn't have hands.

I think sample size is the only reason I haven't picked him as the worst. He was hopeless, aye. But we only had 6 appearances out of him.

Samson actively being made number 1 boils my piss big time.

I can't let shite goalie chat pass by without mentioning Michael Fraser.

Or this guy I'll not utter his name.

Someone mentioned Liam Kelly being on par with Stevie Woods, I'm sorry but thats a wild take.

Woods was with us for 9 years, he lost his place to Howie quickly as it was established he just wouldn't do. When Howie left us with a week to go until the season 97/98 season kicked off we were that skint we couldn't bring anyone else in. That was the same season as the Durie incident but he also repeated this feat against Paul Wright. I remember Billy Davies wanted to favour him over Mikko Kaven as the Finnish guy couldn't speak English and struggled to command his box but he got injured. When Goram got dropped for a couple of mistakes, Stevie got the nod as number one and typically made his own errors before getting turfed back out. He got a reprieve in the admin season but lost his place to Francois Dubourdeau. How the likes of Woods and Samson got great GK coach roles are beyond me, I suppose you could show the players your own highlight reels and just say don't do that.

Someone on here recently said one of our players (can't mind who) played like their limbs were being controlled by four different xbox controllers.

Chapman played like he was being controlled by someone trying to use an xbox controller to turn the kettle on.

No one has mentioned Graeme Smith who is Liam Kelly reincarnate.

If we had persisted with Samson in 16/17, we would have been relegated for sure.

Stevie Woods wasn't as bad as people make out.  Saved a Mark Viduka penalty once.

Anyway, too much negativity on here.  John Ruddy is the best I've seen, followed by the Saturday shagger.

If fit I would leave it at Blaney, Butcher, Casey - don’t risk a broken cheek (if Butcher’s nose is an issue it is Mugabi).

Surely the recruitment saw Spencer on the right Gent on the left, let us see it.

Miller on crutches will see Spittal, Slaterry and Paton with Davor off the bench.

The aim must have been Biereth and Wilkinson but maybe start with Bair and give Wilko a chance near the end.

If none of this works bring young Ross off the bench to run into gaps.

I think Blaney is due a run in the team to show us and the manager what he can do.  Not sure how many consecutive games he has played, can’t be more than 3.

Sort of got it right but no Gent
