“Pacey lightweight winger. Basic talent on the ball but not involved enough. Living off a name. Hooked.”

that’s the comment from a game I watched him in last year.

To be fair, I certainly hope our scouting was based on a bit more than just his name and performance in a random one off game last year.

Think all of our other signings this summer have been 24 plus with a bit of experience, so young Sherwin is a bit of a departure from that. Looks more like someone with raw attributes that the club obviously hope they can develop.

Given he was still under contract at Wolves and we’ve had to pay a fee to get him, it suggests it’s one the club have actually put a fair bit of effort into getting it done anyway.

I didn't actually clock that there was a fee involved. I'm pretty sure this will have been buttons but it's encouraging the club are still willing to pay a small fee for the right player.

I'm excited by this signing, the boy has a pretty good pedigree. I'm all for players which will get fans off their seat.

It looks like he is primarily a left winger so I would guess that he will go in front of Hylton in the pecking order? as well as giving us another option generally.

Imagine Gboly on one wing and Seedorf on the other

I don't think there's any doubt that Young Sherwin looks a bit of a punt (hopefully more Kipré than Newell). I'd imagine the "undisclosed fee" is a fairly nominal amount. Curiously it's not mentioned in the MFC announcement. There's only mention of money being involved in the spiel from Wolves.

In terms of our scouting we brought in Akeal Rehman for Craigan's u20s last year from Wolves Academy (with much less fanfare, he didn't even get a squad number or player profile on the OS). I wonder if we've got someone who's covering that area (geographically speaking) and level.

Joining the dots based on comments Maurice Ross has made the problem with Rehman was that he was a bit of a pointless signing rather than being a poor player (I thought he showed up pretty well in the Irn Bru Cup games I saw FWIW). Essentially, the question Ross seemed to be asking was why were we signing a player from an EPL Academy in a position we were pretty well stocked in terms of our own Academy players: Turnbull, Semple, McAlear, Kettings, Cornelius et al.

It's been well established that we're very, very short on wide players for a side that seems to want to play a system that relies on wingers. In that respect it's not as if signing Young Sherwin is blocking any pathway for anyone. It's really a case now of whether he's actually any use. I'd imagine he'll get more of a chance here than he was going to at Wolves or the shitshow that Bradford seem to have become.

In that respect suppose we'll need to wait and see what the squad looks like at the end of the window. While Seedorf may well be a punt this time last week it was looking like we were about to re-sign a 28 year old winger who couldn't actually get into our starting XI last season. So that's probably a bit of context.

If we're able to bring in a couple more established forwards on loan (Hiya Gboly, hiya pal) it'll probably take the edge off a bit.

Incidentally it looks like we've got a bounce game vs Oxford u23s/18s this morning. No idea whether it's our Reserves or what.

If we don’t put at least 6 by them we riot. I suspect our team will be mainly full of some youngsters and any of the trialists with a few who seem to be lacking fitness.

Being a left winger Seedorf's signing could put the mockers on a move for Ariyibi.

In fairness Burrows was on Twitter last night saying we're still keen on Gboly. Whether it actually happens is anyone's guess.

Not claiming any deep knowledge of either Seedorf or Hylton but both (along with Cole) seem to be able to play on either wing. Also, Robinson's thing last season was very much using inverted wingers. The bold Gboly is actually a right winger by trade.

Assuming Cole's been brought in primarily to play through the middle (where he scored his goals with Fleetwood) we still only have Hylton and Seedorf as wide options.

You have to imagine that they're all here because they can play various roles. In Robinson's tenure, he seems to have always sought a bit of flexibility from players, something which stuck out with Frear (quite aside from asking him to play wing-back) was when we stuck him on the right a couple of times last season, and through the middle later on in the year.

Cole, Hylton and Seedorf (as well as the possibility of Ariyibi) all seem to have the ability to play across a front three. You could even chuck Polworth in there as an example of a guy who can be a 6, 8, 10 or wide in a pinch. When you've got a budget and squad as small as we have, it's probably a good balance to have, with guys that can fill in across various roles, rather than having more specialist (if you're kind)/limited (if you're not) guys like Frear and Johnson which requires back-ups for those specific roles.
