However nationalised rail was quite unionised whereas the deregulated private road haulage industry was not. So there was a move away from rail to road in the 1980s under the Thatcher Government. 40 years later and a not particularly well paid non unionised industry is short of drivers as their cheap foreign labour have fucked off after Brexit. While I was out running the other day (aye, I know, take a second to digest that), there was some kind of debate on BBC Scotland about the shortage of truck drivers. What to do, what to do. To be fair you do need both rail and road haulage. A good coordinated system would use rail for the long distance strategic movements to regional depots, and road for the local distribution from the depots. I realise the channel tunnel carries freight, but looking at that report it states since it opened: More than 430 million tonnes of goods have been carried through the Tunnel mainly on board the Eurotunnel Truck Shuttles but also on the freight trains of the Railway Operators. So my point was more about not using the tunnel as an underground ferry for the trucks, but rather as a method of actually using proper freight trains to bring goods into the country, which would then fit into a properly planned train and truck infrastructure.
