I’d like to see some (many) comedians doing that when referring to him. If the BBC can use the term "The so-called Islamic State", then surely the more moderate: "The alleged sex offender, Prince Andrew......" ....isn't too much of a jump (f-narr).

What can he do if people refer to him as a sex offender? Seriously? There is no way he can take any sort of legal action without creating insurmountable problems for himself.

Sherrif John Bunnell
I'm surprised that Andrew hasn't been given Thailand or the Vatican City trade envoy gig yet. Maybe he'll get the Pitcairn Islands.

tamthebam
A lot of freight used to be taken by rail. However nationalised rail was quite unionised whereas the deregulated private road haulage industry was not. So there was a move away from rail to road in the 1980s under the Thatcher Government. 40 years later and a not particularly well paid non unionised industry is short of drivers as their cheap foreign labour have fucked off after Brexit. And next time you're stuck behind a convoy of lorries in your car belching out not very environmentally friendly fumes think whether those goods in the trailer wouldn't have been easier transported by rail.

While I was out running the other day (aye, I know, take a second to digest that), there was some kind of debate on BBC Scotland about the shortage of truck drivers. What to do, what to do. I listened through the whole thing waiting for the phrase "rail infrastructure" to be mentioned, but I needn't have bothered.

To be fair you do need both rail and road haulage. A good coordinated system would use rail for the long distance strategic movements to regional depots, and road for the local distribution from the depots. It’s just a pity we don’t have a permanent reliable rail link to the continent that could be used to bring in imports on large goods train, rather than use all these relatively small lorries on ferries and shuttle trains.

I realise the channel tunnel carries freight, but looking at that report it states since it opened: More than 430 million tonnes of goods have been carried through the Tunnel mainly on board the Eurotunnel Truck Shuttles but also on the freight trains of the Railway Operators. So my point was more about not using the tunnel as an underground ferry for the trucks, but rather as a method of actually using proper freight trains to bring goods into the country, which would then fit into a properly planned train and truck infrastructure. Maybe there already is something like that, but it seems to me we mostly depend on trucks for everything, short, long, and international distance.

There is and they're set up for up to thirty trains a day. It doesn't get used to anything like capacity. No incentives, I guess.

Surely there must be an incentive now, in that we wouldn't need drivers to drive in both Europe and the UK, which is one of the issues I thought there was (foreign drivers getting caught up in queues so not wanting to come to the UK etc)

NotThePars
A quick Google gives an article from 4 years ago that says the number of students in Scotland exceeded 235,000. Maybe if Salmond engaged in student politics he could’ve had an MSP elected.
