The Official Former President Trump thread

I have no idea of the truth of the chemical "attack" in Idib, it was probably as the US says, though some of the footage looked a bit staged.

There were certainly serious doubts about the previous "red line" incident. https://www.lrb.co.uk/v36/n08/seymour-m-hersh/the-red-line-and-the-rat-line

It came at a very useful time for many actors as getting rid of Assad was dropping far down the list of Western priorities for Syria, and it will now be right back up there.

It's also possible that he has rivals within the regime trying to f**k things up for him with the Russians, who are no doubt furious, if it was launched from Shayrat airbase.

The sooner the west stops mucking about in the middle east and leaves it to smash itself up the better. Take in refugees where possible by all means but please stop mucking about in the desert, particularly with bombs.

It's really telling that a lot of liberals are flocking to congratulate Trump on approving bombing of Syria rather than focusing on his refusal to take in refugees. It's utterly depressing that the UK as well would rather argue the case for bombing runs rather than taking in the people who will suffer from these strikes.

Jeffrey Goldberg has a v.good article on The Atlantic about this and the end of the 'Obama Doctrine'.

Also, the alleged Kushner/Bannon conflict could make great viewing. Let's see what happens next.

Syrian opposition claim that the pilot of the plane that dropped the "sarin" was a Syrian squadron commander. Sounds unusual, but presumably he would have the ability to order the loading of weaponry without the authority of his bosses. Just a theory.

Most liberals as far as I can tell who are supportive of the attack also condemned Trump for his immigration policy and refusal to take refugees. His immigration policy has been pretty widely condemned by liberals.
