Premier League 2017-2018

It's clearly not been right at Arsenal for a good number of years (perhaps even the last decade) but you have to admire Wenger for the teams he built in the early days.  That 97/98 team that won the double was one of the top three teams, IMO, of the PL era.

                      Seaman

Dixon Keown Adams Winterburn

Parlour Vieira Petit Overmars

              Anelka Bergkamp

An outstanding side!

Aye but the defensive unit he inherited he did not build.

Classic Wenger jumped before he was pushed. Has nothing to offer Arsenal any more and a change was needed.

22 years he’s been there, loyalty you don’t see In Football anymore.

Vieira 2/1 fav to replace him. Luis Enrique 10/1 looks a decent bet unless he’s agreed with Chelsea.

Well Arsene has finally decided to go. 'A good show, but went on to long' probably sums it up. However he has been a great Manager and you have to respect the football his teams played! Some of his sides late 90s and the first half of the 00’s were just frightening when you seen them in the flesh.

You're right, yes, but each of those players at the back have credited Wenger for not only extending their career at the top, but improving them too.

It was an incredible side.

There's a lot of talk about Wenger outstaying his welcome but tbf, would they really have been much better off if he left a few years ago?

The DoF and board have fucked up a lot of the handling of the contracts which I think they've spent the season trying to sort out so they can compete in the future. Chamberlain, Walcott, Gibbs, Coquelin were all pushed out this season and it's apparent that their wages were actually increasing quite a bit. The Sanchez debacle was solved with taking a player in Mkhitaryan who wouldn't have normally been sold to league rivals and they also managed to use Giroud to assist in a deal for Aubameyang who was highly sought after. I think Wenger's last year has been OK when put into perspective as it gives his replacement a bit of manoeuvrability in the budget. Ozil also secured.

It's not been outstanding but when you look at rivals spending power and compare it, it hasn't been a complete disaster. The worst part of it has been Spurs being so far ahead league wise but they seem to have found a bit of fortune in almost all of their young projects coming together perfectly (that's not writing them off but the probability is that even the best run youth setups in the world with a good route to the first team will generally have quite a bit of misfortune in terms of injuries or other unforeseen issues) while, for whatever reason, Arsenal haven't been as successful with this side of things as they were in the past (but still relatively good compared to most of the league).

It's potentially good for them to get this change now but unless there's real investment there, the new manager is still going to be paying catchup and I don't imagine their status is going to change overnight.

If anyone hadn’t heard the news and turned on SSN just now, they would have thought he had died.
Going by TalkShite this morning you'd think the world had ended. Brazil, McCoist, White.....full of utter shite. To clarify it's the first I've times in for about 6 months.

Just the 13 pieces about Wenger on the BBC website.

Was just about to say, went on the BBC site and thought he was dead. Although I did enjoy the "Celtic 'would let Arsenal speak to Rodgers'" headline

Yip, and what we've seen since is that for all the hype about the wonderful football they played, it was that defensive unit that was the key to his success. Since they retired (and Sol Campbell) they haven't won the league.
