I don't particularly find Izzard funny but I actually respected him for making the effort during the IndyRef campaign to actually try and offer some kind of view as to why we should stay in the union. I didn't agree with him but he was one of the few to come up here and try to make a difference and I appreciated that.

Well this thread took quite the turn. For the record, I don't care if Connolly is pro or anti-Independence as like me he no longer lives in Scotland so his opinion matters not a f**k.

Anyone who bows and scrapes to a monarch is an absolute jeb end, however.

It's meaningless and not accepting it is hassle that people don't need. Just take it and get on with it.

I don’t really see how not accepting a knighthood is hassle.

”Dear sir/madam, I do not wish to endorse your institution and therefore politely decline this award. Kind regards, Mr. William Connolly”

I know he’s dyslexic and that but come on.

No, he's crawled after that knighthood since he left Drymen. From drinking in the king's in Irvine wearing banana boots before a gig at the marymass festival, to Hollywood and being part of the establishment, must change a person totally

The Proclaimers

In Recognition of your 100 million album sales
In Recognition of your popularity
You take your gaudy prize from people you said you despised
You wear your self-respect upon your bended knees.

In spite of all your claims
It looks like you're just the same
As every other clown, who likes put the crown
Before or after their name.

In Recognition of your service to the working class
In Recognition of your party loyalty
You get an ermine robe and you declare when you are probed
You only took it so the missus would be pleased

In spite of all your claims
It looks like you're just the same
As every other clown, who likes put the crown
Before or after their names.

Ohhhhhh Vanity
It gets them one by one
Patronage and Monarchy
And all they entail, rarely fail

In Recognition of your bravery up on the stage
In Recognition of your bank ability
You get to wait in lines with soldiers crippled by land mines
And you think it's the yanks that don't get irony

In spite of all your claims
It looks like you're just the same
As every other clown, who likes put the crown
Before or after their names.

In spite of all your claims
It looks like you're just the same
As every other clown, who likes put the crown
Before or after their names.

Their name
Their name
Their name

He didn’t offer a view he muttered platitudes that highlighted the paucity of his thinking.

Back on topic...

When I was a lot younger, I bought a book called "Billy Connolly - the authorised version. I dug it out, because I recalled him offering an opinion on the honours system. The book was published in 1976, and reflects his personal views at that time, I suppose.

On page 135, he's quoted as saying:

"But I would never take a knighthood or any of these decorations. I mean, can you imagine it? It would be selling my punters out completely."

Just saying...

FFS that was 41 years ago. Only politicians, idiots and liars refuse to change their minds on issues over that time period.

My point related to the fact that he has changed his viewpoint over that precise period. He's perfectly entitled to. Just as I'm entitled to point out that I consider him to be a bit  hypocritical & two-faced.

At least you're better at arithmetic than you are at citing contrasting examples though. I can think of quite a few politicians that dropped opposition to the honours system when a wee bauble was dangled in front of them. John ""I don't want to be a member of the House of Lords" Prescott is probably the most high profile of recent years, but Alistair "For a worker's republic" Darling runs him close.

Unsurprisingly, just like Connolly, they are both supposed to be socialists

So, again, should Labour just refuse to enter the Lords and make it easier for the Tories to pass policy? That seems the very epitome of cutting your nose off to spite your face.

At the very least, they shouldn't be hypocritical shit-gibbons over it.

That would be the same Labour that have had a majority in the Commons on numerous occasions in the last 100 years or so?

Remind me, hasn't Corbyn stated that he wants Labour to reintroduce a manifesto pledge to abolish unelected peers?

Labour has had a majority lots of times. There still would have been occasions where they needed to get legislation through the Lords so it would be foolish to refuse to take part and let the Tories have the run of the place.

If you're asking whether unelected peers should be/should have been abolished then I'd say yes, absolutely. But until this happens it would be madness to refuse to take part and make it even easier for Tories to implement policy.

This is a reasonable point, in fairness. I think if Prezza had just said "I don't like the Lords but, while it exists, I would attend to help the Party" then few people would really be able to slag him off for that, I reckon.

You seem t be under the impression that changing your mind on an issue after so many years is somehow hypocritical which is a VERY odd thing to think.

Are you trying to tell us that you personally have changed your mind about abslutely nothing in your life?

Good point.

I’ve changed my mind.  I used to think you were a bit of a c**t but now I think you’re a complete c**t.
