I'm guessing the young Turk holding the bottle aloft is making a political point as that area would have been 'dry' when this picture was taken.

It was also a Tory area and for years Teddy Taylor was the MP for Cathcart.  For many years though local councillors described themselves as 'Progressives' or 'Moderates' rather than use the 'C' word.

Correct that the crowd are passing by Cathkin Park, home of Third Lanark, but heading for Hampden rather than going to watch the Hi Hi.

The billboard was an advert for Jimmy Anderson, elected as a local Cathcart Councillor in the 1960s as a Progressive/Moderate which was a name used for the anti Socialists in some urban areas since the 1920s. Although thought of as a Tory front it was more of a broader coalition that would have took in Liberals and anybody else that didn't like Labour. The SNP were a bit later in the game.

Jimmy Anderson became the Tory MPs (Teddy Taylor) election agent but in the end became a member of the SNP. A twist of history considering one faction that formed the SNP in 1934 was the Cathcart Unionists who believed in Home Rule for Scotland.

Not the completely the end of the Third Lanark story as post 1967 the Hi Hi fans regrouped and held a meeting a few hundred yards South from where the photograph was taken, in the Dixon Halls.

Teddy Taylor MP chaired the meeting with the now Ballie Anderson in attendance.

One slight problem, things move slowly on Glasgow's South Side.

Third Lanark died in 1967 and the first meeting of supporters to fight for the honour of the Hi Hi..........was in 1974.

I'm one of the diminishing band who attended what became Thirds last game at Boghead on the evening of Friday 28th April 1967.  Of course no-one in attendance was aware of that at the time and as such there were only about 600 of us for what we thought was an end of season dead rubber.  Although there were obvious known issues with Thirds, few people realised the extent of them, and as an 11-year old I certainly didn't.

Harry Kirk scored a double , the first of which was in the first minute without a Thirds player touching the ball, with Roy McCormack and another double from Gus McMillan being Sons scorers.

Thirds last goal was scored by the teenage Drew Busby from literally along the road here.  Drew was a great guy and IMO was one of the best uncapped players I ever saw in the Scottish game.  Most folk of a certain age will recall his 100% commitment and no little skill, but they may not know that his classmate at Levenvale Primary in Alexandria was Bobby Kerr who lifted the FA Cup with Sunderland in 1973 and who is still revered on Wearside.

I've said before, but I was at that game. Right on the barrier roughly at the half way line. Remember Rangers' tactics were mostly "Give the ball to Peter McCloy to launch it right into the Caley box". My uncle, a Rangers fan, took me, and he was fuming that the one talented player on display, Davie Cooper, spent the entire game out on the wing largely being ignored.

MacDonald, the keeper (Billy, not Hamish) lived 3 or 4 doors up from us in Smithton.

Aye, you’re right of course. Brain fart.
As a matter of interest I got the photos from Billy Urk, he lent me 3 scrapbooks and I scanned a load of stuff.

Do you know if this was an official SFA release? Very unusual.

The keeper there, Davie Gorman, was a stalwart for Montrose when I started attending Links Park in the 70's. I remember him being quite diminutive, be he doesn't seem to be that small in that picture.

He's probably the second smallest in that photo, though!

Graham Honeyman was voted NSL Player of the Year in 1985 when he was with West Adelaide. He was part of their squad that won the title in 1978 the second season of the NSL.

Was he on the comedy show "I'm Dave Gorman"?

I can remember watching that match at the time. I’m pretty sure it was actually shown live here which was very unusual in those days. I think it was in black and white (and not just because we didn’t have a colour tv) and definitely with the old style phone call  from abroad commentary.

We beat Chile 4-2 on that mini South American tour and added to the good performance against Argentina it continued to build the genuine feeling that we actually had a chance of  doing very well at the World Cup a year later.  It wasn’t all just hype inspired by Ally MacLeod…..there were serious grounds for optimism

Motherwell... nice stuff but can they do it on a wet Tuesday night in Matabeleland?

"Absolutely" the answer - not to mention Griqualand West, Mashonaland et al - as they were proving 90yrs ago:
