A Photographic History Of Scottish Football

I didn't say they weren't friendly or welcoming here (quite the opposite in fact), but they also are guilty through ignorance of casual racism.  Examples would be saying 'Hey Joe" to all foreigners - Joe is the nickname Filipinos gave to American military.  And, in their local language the word for foreigner is 'Americano."  Low level casual racism and not something to get upset about but still.  Unlike you, I haven't witnessed much negativity to locals here from ex-pats but then again the Philippines is very American-centric and the major group of visible ex-pats here are the Americans.

Imagine a country where all strangers are addressed as "Jimmy" ...

Now you mention it, there are some similarities between Filipinos and Scots.  Most particularly hospitable nature of both - having seen that from the other side I can perhaps now understand that this isn't always comfortable for others.

Worked "dahn sarf" in London for a couple of years where I was known as the "sweaty sock" (=Jock).  Ironically, I had to attend conference calls with the Glasgow office so that I could translate for the cockney engineers what the Weegie draftsmen were trying to tell them.  They had a vague idea of where Glasgow was ... somewhere north of Watford possibly, where it was cold, rained a lot and inhabited by angry wee ginger folk ... not far wrong really, tbf ...

It was 115yrs ago today Rangers beat Dundee by coin toss after drawing 1-1 in the Scottish Exhibition Tournament final at Saughton, Edinburgh before 10,000 - in a temporary stadium of which only tantalising visual record survives:

Edinburgh City played their first-ever match 95yrs ago today... losing 5-2 at home to Queen's Park, whose fame they hoped to replicate as "amateurs of the east", in a contest also unveiling the new Marine Gardens stadium in Portobello.

Even at SFA's AGM today in 1913 there was dissatisfaction at the national team manager(s):

Ex-Morton player Joe Caven has passed away. Was part of the famous 63-64 promotion winning team and had the word "assist" been a thing back then, he'd have had loads of them for Allan McGraw's goals.

Myself and a number of others met him in Keith Social Club (below) during the 2003 Highland Tour (he lived in Nairn). Spoke to the fans that day in an impromptu Q&A - a genuinely nice guy.

Sad news: Joe Caven formed a great partnership with the late Allan McGraw over a short time, helping Morton into the First Division with a huge points total.

Was reading about him the other day, and although born in the Central Belt and playing for many years with Airdrie, as @AyrshireTon says above, he settled in Nairn where he called his house 'Cappielow'.

The Sports Ground looks like it was in the same locus as Saughton Enclosure, home of Lothian Thistle for 20 years.

Sadly, believe it or not, the current situation is even worse with no football played there at all.

The council demolished the pavilion housing the changing facilities and showers 2 years ago (with the promise of a modern replacement) and they've yet to get their finger oot.

there used to be 20/25 pitches at the racecourse and now there are none, yep folks there isn’t one lined pitch left. only joggers, dog walkers and the scottish pipe band championship use it now

back in the seventies/eighties there were always a couple of hundred more fans at second half of games at love street after the racecourse football finished

Charlie Nicholas turning up at Tory Party rally probably beats that by some distance.

That didn't actually happen.

Bit of an urban myth that, Nicholas was at some charity thing connected to Arsenal and the witch was in attendance and she requested a picture with some of the celebrities at the event, one of which was Charlie, he spoke of how uncomfortable he was with it but felt like he couldn't really refuse as directors and management were in attendance.

What a goalkeeper this guy was for the Dons, after replacing Jim Leighton in 1988, Theo Snelders is probably best remembered for saving Anton Rogan's spot kick against Celtic in 1990, the first Scottish Cup final to go to penalties and, rather unfortunately pulling out of his debut for The Netherlands against West Germany about half an hour before kick off as he, basically had a massive case of stage fright or, to use a more Scottish term he shat his breeks.

I vaguely recall him spitting the dummy out a few years later when Aberdeen refused, initially to let him join Rangers, he did eventually join the **** but only made a handful of appearances as second choice to Andy Goram, do the Dons fans hold him in pretty dislikeable memories in similar fashion to others who went to Ibrox after Pittodrie as I recall David Robertson, Richard Foster and Ryan Jack getting severe stick.
