Pittodrie in 1937. I think this is from an Aberdeen v Inverness Thistle match, Scottish Cup tie in a January blizzard, 2,800 brave souls witnessed a home 6-0 win.

Duns v Dons in 1954, 0-8. Only 700 watched Aberdeen vanquish 'The Dingers', including an away support of 6.

This is, I think, from the start of season 1963-64, 60 years ago. Big smiling Tony Harvey was with Dundee for a few seasons, but only played a handful of matches.

A legendary manager there..

The one top right I mean. There's Wee Craigie Broon too...

2600 at a Dons Scottish cup tie in 1937.........interesting.  Wonder if there was an outcry before the final about share of tickets.   There were only 147,365 at the hampden final but i am sure some of the "SFA blazers" will have put forward the case that Aberdeen should only get 2,600 tickets...........

Recycling at Glenesk Park, home of Dundee Violet, about 10 years ago.

40 years ago today Violet celebrated their centenary with a game between a Tayside Junior Select and Dundee United. The Select won 4-2. The picture on the programme cover will be the 1928/29 Violet side that won the Scottish Junior Cup.

David Speedie and Frank McAvennie contrive to miss this chance in the away leg of the 1986 World Cup playoff in Australia. Finished 0-0 I think.

Played on this day in 1985.

United had a strong line up for that match, and a young Jimmy Page (not that one) came on to replace Reilly in the second half.

His starting debut, a few months later in April 1984, lasted around 30 seconds, Tommy Boyd breaking his Page's leg with a wild challenge. A talented winger, Page never recovered from that incident, and after sporadic appearances over the next 3 years, he retired from the game aged 22.

You'll see his injury here, early in the match:

I took the day off work to watch this game which contained absolutely zero football (certainly none from Scotland). Speedie should have been sent off for any of at least three dreadful lunges on Aussie players. Ferguson picked a team to kick the  opposition off the ball and slow the game down. Very successful too, as 0-0 meant we won 2-0 on aggregate.

Excuse me for noticing the irony when Uruguay did the same to us to qualify from the group, instead of us, in the Finals when Steve Nicol missed an open goal.

About 9/10.00am ko wasn't it. I took a day off from the Social and walked to my mates house to watch it. I saw a colleague on a fraud observation and blew his cover, shouting in to him in his car parked outside someone's  house.

We had been top on goals scored for two weeks and had just slipped to 2nd despite beating Dundee 2-0 (Celtic won their game 3-0). Having both the quarter final 2nd leg at Rugby Park and this game played on consecutive weekends, we were losing ground but had games in hand.

Sadly, two games in December - Rangers at home and Celtic away - saw a couple of disgraceful refereeing decisions and completely de-railed our strong start to the season. Thankfully, neither of those clubs would win the league.

Surprised to read that...

The referee looks like a particularly angry Vic Reeves character who didn't make the cut to actually appear in any sketches. In fact, everyone in this photo looks as if they're about to deck the photographer.

I'm not sure who the Aussie captain is? Possibly David Mitchell who was with Eintracht Frankfurt and also played for Rangers.

The referee was from Brazil, José Roberto Ramiz Wright.

I was an autograph hunting kid after the game below where, for historical purposes, I was privileged to witness a iconic figure like Jim McLean going absolutely off his head in the dressing room, first hand.

You could hear, and even see, much of what was going on in the dressing room from the narrow lane behind the Main Stand.

McLean was going crazy, and I remember someone becoming his focus by making the mistake of answering him back to point out that they were angry.

"YOU'RE ANGRY? YOU'RE ANGRY? EVERYBODY'S FUCKIN' ANGRY."

Not sure who it was, but a torn faced Hamish McAlpine completely blanked the autograph hunters shortly afterwards, so it might have been him.

Interesting to see the reporter thought that two minutes of stoppage time was a lot, although the two dodgy handball penalties were more in line with the modern game.

Adelaide born John Kosmina., 60 caps and 25 goals for Australia. Played 1 game for Arsenal in 1978/79. David Mitchell was born in Glasgow but brought up and started his football career in Adelaide.

Apart from Mitchell all the others seemed to play for local teams.

It was the 90’s before it became common for Australian players to move overseas. Nowadays home based players are the exception, in the squad of 23 for the October friendlies only 3 were home based.
