Great pic of the old Caledonia Street end of Love Street in early 1960's. The crowd in that one end probably exceeds St Mirren's capacity today.

Going by the Saints shirt and the size of the crowd it's possibly the 62-63 League Cup section match which Saints won 2-1

Attendance 33916.

Donald Ford - Hearts

Donald Ford - Hearts.jpg

Probably a photo taken when he joined Hearts in 1964. Given that his profession now is as a photographer, not sure how impressed he’d be with this one.

I'd forgotten about having the numbers on socks.

On 7 June 1967 the Vancouver Royal Canadians (Sunderland in disguise) beat Dallas Tornado (aka Dundee United) 4-1 at the Empire Stadium, Vancouver. Scots Neil Martin and George Mulhall (2) scored three of Sunderland’s goals.
Sunderland had a strong Scottish connection with Ian McColl their manager. He was Scotland’s manager from 1960-65 played for original Rangers (from 1945-60). Scottish players were George Kinnell (ex Aberdeen, Stoke, Oldham, Middlesbrough), Jim Baxter (Scottish cap, ex Raith Rovers, Rangers, Notts Forest), George Herd (Scottish cap, ex Inverness Thistle, Queen’s Park, Clyde, Hartlepool Utd), George Mulhall (Scottish cap, ex Aberdeen, Morton), John O’Hare (Scottish cap, ex Derby, Leeds Utd, Notts Forest), Neil Martin (Scottish cap, ex Alloa, Queen of the South, Hibs, Coventry, Notts Forest, Brighton, Crystal Palace), Billy Hughes (Scottish cap, ex Derby, Leicester, Carlisle Utd).

Following from a report on the Roker Report site with a link to the full report below.

With discipline lax under manager Ian McColl, Jim Baxter by his own admission led a clique of “bored” hard-drinking/hard partying footballers whose exploits included - trashing hotel rooms at their base in Vancouver, the Georgian Towers hotel.

Throwing a tv through a bedroom window. Having to be rescued from their bed as they had awoken to find themselves surrounded by broken glass and no shoes within reach. A drink the gantry party game that went awry and resulted in one of the players being admitted to hospital with alcohol poisoning. The arrest of Baxter and John Parke in Washington after a fight in a bar in a black neighbourhood of the city. A riotous swimming pool party that went on into the early hours of the morning of a game.

That cup final was the end of a period of four season dominance that saw them win 3 Junior Cups, 4 Central League titles, 1 West of Scotland Cup & 1 Central Sectional Cup.

No pyramid back then or access to the Big Scottish Cup so we'll never no what might have been.

See Darvel beating Aberdeen for details.

The last photo taken of Ayr FC and Ayr Parkhouse teams prior to the 1910 merger that brought about the formation of Ayr United FC.20240607_090423.jpg.151f98e63f60789260b5822c6faaae2d.jpg

The new club would decide to use Ayr FC's Somerset Park, in the Wallacetoun area of Ayr. While it is the same site, the alignment of the pitch has been altered on a couple of occasions.

Ayr Parkhouse's Ground, Beresford Park (at one point also the home ground of Ayr FC), was situated much closer to the town centre at Burns Statue Square. For anyone that knows Ayr, pretty much where the old cinema, Sports Direct / Matalan now are. You can see the train station in the background.20240607_090526.jpg.55c03b5b111a70cdfde67cad6068d511.jpg

I thought he was an accountant?* Anyway, he should be retired at his age.

* I see he gave it up in 1991.
