John White in action for Spurs in their 3-1 defeat of Burnley in the 1962 FA Cup Final. This is from an interesting BBC article on his son who was only 6 months old when lightning struck. I’m lucky enough to have seen John White in action on TV for both Scotland and the great Spurs teams of the early 60’s.

Musselburgh Athletic host the Honest Toun 5s for the John White Memorial Trophy during Musselburgh's gala week last month.

There used to be teams from Hibs, Hearts and Meadowbank who entered- Meadowbank won the competition once or twice but this year it seemed to be local amateurs who took part, presumably due to the earlier and earlier starts to Scottish football these days. To be honest I was surprised the 5s were still going as I hadn't seen any mention of them for years.

I was there a couple of weeks back as my daughter’s Musselburgh Windsor team were ballgirls.

You’re right, I can remember going maybe 30 years ago on just one occasion and the big clubs sent teams.

Strictly amateur now, with local teams made up of mates and local pub names, couple of under 20 teams, plus a ‘legends’ team which may or may not have included some local legends, I didn’t know any of them. 😀

Good fun though on a nice evening weather wise, as you can imagine there were some meaty challenges going in.

5 August 1972 Pre-Season Friendly Arbroath 0 Tranmere Rovers 3. Tranmere hod former Liverpool and Scottish International Tommy Lawrence in goal and Ron Yeats at centre half. They also hadn’tanother two Scottish born players playing,  inside right Tommy Veitch (ex Hearts and later on played for Morton, Airdrie and QoTS) and inside left Tommy Young (ex Falkirk). Another ex Liverpool and Scottish international Ian St John played a few games for Tranmere that season. According to Wikipedia Tommy Veitch died on his 38th birthday in 1987. 4 goals for Gunnar Nordahl I see. Highest non-Italian goalscorer in Serie A history - and third highest all-time scorer, largely with AC Milan.

Likewise 4 goals for Denmark’s John Hansen who moved to Juventus after the Olympics. Scored 124 goals in 187 appearances for Juventus helping them win the Scudetto in 1948/49 and 1951/52. Serie A top scorer in 1951/52 in between Gunnar Nordahl being top scorer the 2 seasons before and 3 after.

The officials come out for kick off- the first men's senior* game in Scotland to have all female officials (afaik): Camelon v Newtongrange Star, 2015.

Referee: Lorraine Watson

Assistants: Hayley Irvine, Kylie McMullan

Lorraine Watson was the first female referee to officiate in a Scottish League game- Edinburgh City v Berwick Rangers at Ainslie Park. Kylie McMullan ran the line in a couple of Premier League matches. Hayley Irvine wasn't a bad assistant ref either.

(*it was a Juniors game but you know what I mean)

21 years go today, Morton faced Airdrie United in the Division 2 season opener at Cappielow.

With the score at 1-1, Referee Somers was injured and one of the assistant took over. Cowboy McCormack came over to the Cowshed and picked out Chic Kavanagh to run the line, to the consternation of the away support.

In truth, Kavanagh had very little to do. The replacement referee was nice enough to award the free kick and penalty which we scored our 2nd and 3rd goals from.

A 1-1 draw on a Friday evening IIRC in front of around 4,000.

Like this picture from the opening day of the 1961/62 season at Palmerston Park. Queen of the South 1 Arbroath 0 in a League Cup group game on 12 August in front of 4,917 fan’s although the report gives the attendance as 5,500. There is no caption for the photo but it’s from the excellent Arbroath Archive site https://www.arbroatharchive.co.uk/matchdetails.php?id=5893

A day late but two Saints wins at Ibrox on the Glorious 12th.

1978, Bobby Torrance scores with 5 minutes to go and is mobbed by Frank McGarvey, Peter Weir, Billy Abercromby and John Young.

1989 Kenny McDowall scores after a howler from Chris Woods. I was at both games.
