A Photographic History Of Scottish Football

I remember that day as a young teenager very clearly. We'd ran the Souness's millionaires very close in the Scottish Cup semi-final that day at Celtic Park and got back to the bus and listened in shock to the reports coming in from Hillsborough.

The thing that wasn't really reported that much, but I always felt was quite poignant, was that at probably exactly the same time, Rangers fans were getting lifted onto the track due to overcrowding and a crush.  Luckily Celtic Park didn't have the big fences.

About 0:53 in this video:

I was at the replay

The crazy thing about that semi final and replay v Rangers at Celtic Park, which held over 60,000 at the time, was that the reported attendances were 47000 and 44000.

If ever there was ever any doubt about Celtic lying about attendances, then not after those games!  You couldn't move, and there was barely a space in the ground anywhere.

More Muirton porn; in the quarter final we beat Morton in a midweek replay after a 2-2 draw.  The game was delayed as 8300 or so attended, with some Saints fans having to stand in the Morton end.  Brilliant seeing a packed Muirton under the floodlights as there are so few colour videos like this of the old ground.

I was in Muirton in March 1970 at the Scottish Cup semi final between Aberdeen and Kilmarnock. The crowd was 25,812. No idea how we all got in.

Yes unbelievable. The record attendance at Muirton was 29,972 for a match against Dundee.  Crazy!

Regarding that semi-final you mention. There was a cracking photo earlier in the thread, and another I found on the internet in B & W. Apologies to the owners, if you're reading please take credit for them here, as they are two great pictures showing a packed Muirton Park in all its glory..

Was the record gate from when Dundee won the League, or was it from earlier?

What's the big building visible absolve the goals in the background of the bottom picture?  Is it the Ice Rink?  Is it still there?

Do you mind me asking all these questions? Do you?  Do you?

I was on a bus coming back from Fort Augustus after a hockey match against the Abbey School...

No the record gate was from a cup tie against Dundee in the early fifties. They allegedly won the league at Muirton and relegated us in the early 60's. So they say, but no one remembers it so it probably never happened :whistle

That was the ice rink and no it went just before the ground did.  The council built the new Dewars rink right beside the new leisure pool on the corner of the Glasgow Road and Asda got the Muirton Park and ice rink site for parking. McDonalds might be where part of the ice rink was.

Yes, i absolutely hate talking about St Johnstone, as you can probably tell.

2 Jan 1971 - Saints 0 Aberdeen 1 Attendance 21,500. It'd take about 2 seasons games to match that now unfortunately.

That'd probably be the last ever 20k crowd at a Saints home game.  I wonder how many we actually had. I think mid teens for the bigots was about normal so doubt it would be too many, even in the pre-war days.

We finished third and Aberdeen second that season apparently.

I have a major gripe with the way the SPFL have taken away fixtures on Boxing Day and the 1st or 2nd of January. They have always been the biggest crowds of the season, and yet they've removed them from the fixture card.

Look at that list. The Dons had a game on Boxing Day, the first AND second of January! 21500 at Muirton and I bet that was way over our average. And aberdeens crowds were around 10,000 most of the season, then went up in December and peaked at 24000 on the 1st of January.

The folk that run our game today are so out of touch it's incredible.

It's another of those ridiculous football is a business situations. Which other business closes at its peak trading times? Imagine Tesco or M&S saying they were shutting for the Christmas week as their staff were tired after a hectic December run in and needed a rest. Yeah right.

My old man took me to a Saints game not long after McDiarmid opened. Like a previous poster mentioned there was a fair bit of interest/novelty factor around it. St Johnstone beat Alloa 3-0 or something.

Obvs been there loads for Dundee games, including the McCann chip semi against Airdrie and that 7-2 drubbing. The 3-2 win during the Bonetti era was ridiculous, and also memorable as I blocked one of the toilets with a massive hangover shite.

The standout was probably the 4-4 draw in the 90s, absolute scenes from start to finish, featuring a dwarf stand in keeper, a glorious come back and someone throwing a pie at Alan Dinnie.

St Johnstone gain promotion from Division 2, April 1988 after stuffing Arbroath.
Photos uncarefully kept in my photo album for 30 years.

After that game we all went onto the pitch to celebrate, and crowded round the tunnel chanting. The players re-emerged in the upper section at the balcony to take the acclaim of the supporters, and one by one threw their shirts into the crowd. I caught the late Gary Thomson's no.6 shirt but another lad got a hand on it as well. We stood for a while trying to strengthen our respective holds on the shirt whilst the celebrations and singing continued, until he offered me the princely sum of £5.

I accepted as it seemed a lot of money to me back then.

Not one of my better decisions.
