Scots women's football boss guilty of elaborate £1500-a-month rent fraud scam - Daily Record

Edinburgh crime: Woman football boss Zola McGoldrick jailed over £30,000 scam to live rent-free in city flat (scotsman.com)

A director of the Scottish Women's Premier League carried out an elaborate fraud scam in a bid to live rent free in a plush Edinburgh city centre flat. Zola McGoldrick, 50, rented out a three-bedroom flat for over 18 months but failed to hand over a penny in rent after claiming she had been caught up in an international money laundering scheme.

The SWPL director McGoldrick, also known as Zola Affley,  even forged letters from RBS, Lloyds and HMRC in her devious effort to convince the flat owner her funds were unavailable to her. The shamed stalwart of the Scottish women's game denied the allegations but was found guilty of fraud following a two-day trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

The court heard McGoldrick was declared bankrupt in March 2020 and she and her family were eventually kicked out of Mr Glen's property owing rent of more than £28,000 in May 2020. McGoldrick was appointed as a director of the inaugural SWPL representing Edinburgh outfit Boroughmuir Thistle FC at a historic meeting at Hampden Park in May last year. She became a member of the league board alongside delegates from Rangers, Celtic, Hearts and Glasgow City. The mother-of-two was then presented with the prestigious SFA Regional Volunteer of the Year for Adult Football award just three months later.

But she was subsequently forced to resign from her position as a director with the SWPL following the guilty verdict in October.

The sheriff said: “You were found guilty after trial of fraud and the charge stated a lengthy course of fraudulent conduct whereby you gave excuses not to pay your rent supported by documents forged by you. Your behaviour was deliberate and when your story started to unravel you failed to admit your guilt and your behaviour had elements of confidence trickery in it. “I cannot have confidence in the content of the report and I am unable to follow its recommendation. The reality is that the only appropriate sentence for a fraud of this nature is a custodial sentence.

McGoldrick was given a six month prison sentence.

Following the guilty verdict, a spokesperson for the SWPL said: “This has come as a complete shock to everyone at the league. We were completely unaware of this situation until today. Zola has tendered her resignation from her non-executive position at the SWPL and it has been accepted by the board with immediate effect.

This is great for equal opportunities: it's nice to know criminality and stupidity isn't just restricted to the men's game!

Probably more in celebration knowing the first batshit Adams interview was on its way.

Is Derek Adams unaware of maths?

Because basic, basic maths will tell you that clubs who can pay more will get better players.

Should we compare the SPFL leagues to the German leagues? The Italian leagues? The French? If not, why not?

How much are the green cheek paying him to run around versus plumbers and students? 🤣

I'd love to hear John Collins' view on how this is actually a good thing.

I mean, doubtlessly it would eventually turn round to the theme of "the opinions of people that haven't scored against Brazil are invalid".

My first memory of hearing Derek Adams speak was on the radio right after they beat Celtic in the cup semi final.

Expected to hear a jubilant bright young manager enthusing about the biggest result in the club's history.

Actually heard a seething roaster raging about everybody who had predicted that Celtic were going to win.

An asterisk went next to his name that day.
