If it was a huddle, would they not all face in towards the pitch, like “the huddle”? Why do they turn their backs?

Because a large part of the self and social identity is exceptionalism. It's a salf identity that rests on a purity which can't bear to acknowledge the existence of outside influences.

A club like no other etc.

I've never understood their continued prominence of a song synonymous and unique to another club in world football.

My own club with many more has a variation of the Blaydon Races but it's nowhere on the same scale.
