D'Jaffo
He might not want to sign for us then. Cammy Ballantyne looks a superior player and will play right back. Unless Ferguson fancies dislodging Willie Dyer at left back then I suspect he'll be on the bench every week for us.He’s apparently capable of playing centre half but only played there twice for us. Once against Arbroath where McCall had to re-shuffle after 20 minutes because he was out his depth and once in a pre-season friendly against Forfar. Maybe Aiken sees him as someone who can cover all areas of the defence but I don’t think he left us because he wasn’t first choice.
callum-ayr
Thinking if McCall has discovered Murdoch can play right back, that may be the reason he’s not bothered with Ferguson. That would leave Geggan, Murdoch and Rose who can cover right back and Harvie, Ecrepont and Higgins at a push at left back. Baird even at right back/centre back if need be. That for me leaves us needing a keeper and centre back as priorities. Assuming Murdoch signs. The only problem for me with that is Geggans injuries. Don’t want him to play 5, miss 4, back for 3, miss 6 etc. That then disrupts the midfield with Murdoch constantly switching.

AUFC 1910
With the huge step up to Championship level, each and every player needs to play in the best position and I would much rather see one of the younger squad players fill a hole if one opens up. Keeps consistency with the positions and formations. We can get away with it in this league as we are not expected to win every single game like in league 1. Should create better player development, a more settled side and put an end to the 'musical chairs' approach when an injury or 2 comes along. I think this is what McCall is genuinely thinking this season and I for one am buzzing. No doubt there will be highs and lows but I trust him and this squad to be involved in more highs than lows. I also firmly believe that one or two teams will be in for a bit if a shock up against us. On the goalie situation, much better to get the right one, no matter when it is. It is a specialist position. I keep thinking to myself that we could have, very easily, and most certainly would have in seasons gone by, lost Shankland, Moore, Crawford and McDaid during the close season. So chins up lads and lassies. Happy days and lots to look forward to.

I’m not aware of Harvie having any niggling injuries either and hopefully with Steven Maguire back full time we can put an end to the constant injury troubles. Geggan is the concern for me as well. Not doubting he can’t hold his own abilities wise but I’d expect him to have injuries and suspensions as well. If we do decide to go for a defender then I’d hope we would sign one that can play CH and RB.

He certainly has the physical attributes and has a lot of first team training experience where McCall will have judged him on how ready he is

Though felt like he was played out of position at most part last season, when available. I also think we need a new centre back, with Rose, Bell, Adams and a fit again Higgins possibly the only ones Ayr has atm. Adams is a defensive midfielder imo, Bell also. Not alot of cover at back. 1 hour ago, placidcasual said: It's Roxanne I feel sorry for. I feel sorry for her too. Edited July 9, 2018 by Roxanne's man I shot the sheriff. It's the same sort of situation that Ayr had with Forrest. Bright young player getting small parts in games to get the experience. Would love to see this boy do well. Ecrepont should maybe start a few games, thrown in at the deep end. I'm unsure whether or not he should be immediate cover for Harvie, more like a rotational thing as it gets him the experience and game time he needs to progress. Kitty_Boy
I wouldn't expect to see Ecrepont in the Betfred Cup games as he doesn't turn 16 until the end of the month.

Time will tell whether these schools work but you would like to think the players have been identified for a reason and come out the other side far more match ready than your average young players from a youth team
Roxanne's man
I see Ayr have signed Sandy Stewart as a coach. That beneficial for anything? He play as a Goalkeeper? Edited July 9, 2018 by Roxanne's man I saw a Whiteboard in W.h.smiths today, it was truly remarkable.

D'Jaffo
We’ll likely sign his son Scott from Airdrie next season. Good player IIRC.

He wouldn’t be signed to play there. Operating a small squad like ours, having players who can play multiple positions helps. Adams and Bell can both play CB and CM, Geggan RB and CM, Forrest both wings and up front, same with McDaid, Moffat CM and CF and Rose CB and RB. Having Murdoch who in theory can cover 2 positions would be an asset and means we don’t need to use money in our tight budget on more cover for RB.

A versatile team is a good option. Players that can play different positions would help keep Ayr up and lowers the wage bill significantly, though surely some players aren't comfortable playing a certain position all the time. Gary Harkins for example, was played totally out of a position he was comfortable in and did not have the desired effect. Robbie Crawford on the right midfield is another one that annoys me, between him and Brian Gilmour a few seasons back, played out of position. Both should be in the centre, Gilmour being able to see great passes and Crawford being an attacking player from the middle. Possibly just me but we have a great attacking 'winger' in Declan Mcdaid. Forrest should play behind a striker, not out Right Imo. Though, another right midfielder is not on the 'We need to get' list, I presume due to our invisible budget.
