Starmer ditches Labour policy on removing the charitable status of private skoolz - will that gain them any extra votes or is it to spare the blushes of the Shadow Cabinet?

Labour obviously has someone acting as Ditchfinder General - my money would be on someone like John McTernan.

I thought I’d read that they had just reaffirmed that policy?

Hurray, a full house of nats not reading the content 🙂

Labour are not removing private schools charity status, but they will slap VAT on fees which does the same thing but with less red tape

"Hurray, a full house of nats"* who having looked at Starmer's and Labour's record on u-turns wouldn't have been in the least surprised if they HAD u-turned on the vat issue.  The surprise will be if they actually stick to it under the fire of the Tories' media barons.

(* Loosely defined as anyone not seeing much difference between the two cheeks.)

They should ban private schools completely. Like Finland.

They are just another way of the elite maintaining their grip on society. What chance have you got against a tie and a crest?

Look at the top of society and where they were educated. The same schools will keep coming up because it is not just the education that their parents are paying for, it's the network. Far more important than your qualifications.

There’s a discussion on one of the other threads about ‘integration’.

No private schools or faith schools would be a big move towards that.

I'd argue that they aren't paying for the education whatsoever.

Outlaw Unions?

Easy, tiger. We have to wait for the Tories to unveil their new measures to prevent workers from striking. Then Labour can either condemn them, but admit that they just won't be able to change anything in power, or say they're eager to vote to introduce any anti-union measures but the Tories are taking too long and they aren't harsh enough anyway.

"Analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies has estimated that adding VAT to private school fees could raise a net £1.3bn to £1.5bn a year, which Labour has said it would use to recruit 6,500 more teachers."

Will that be 6,500 more teachers for public schools, or 6,500 more teachers for private schools?

Unsurprisingly, they don't say.

Always find it a touch amusing that these declarations are always made as if there are 6500 teachers, 20,000 police, 10,000 nurses etc just sitting around with their thumbs up their arses waiting to be 'recruited'.

People are avoiding these professions like the plague, leaving in droves, and choosing to study other disciplines. Where the f**k do they plan on recruiting all these professionals who simply do not exist?

Oh they exist. But we told them to bugger off in 2016.

Em, it doesn’t do “the same thing”.

The biggest benefit of charitable status is National Non-Domestic Rates Relief, and of course no Corporation Tax on any “surplus”.

Yes, but those nasty bad boy Scottish Nationalists all creepily sing from the same hymn sheet, and that's bad.

Didn't the Barclay review remove the relief albeit it's introduction was delayed due to Covid ?

ETA the Barclay review removed the SG funding provided to LAs to award the mandatory and discretionary elements so it's a defacto removal of the relief as any LA awarding it would need to fund it as the SG no longer do.
