Fuel duty has been frozen for over a decade as a political sop to Terry the white van man by the Tory government. As public transport prices stepped up with inflation (and more), this has made private car use significantly cheaper than the alternatives in relative terms. Road tax is not charged on electric vehicles, despite them not actually contributing in the long run to the government's own targets (this incentive will have to be replaced soon to avoid falling tax revenues). The idea that the UK is a car-hostile environment is out of touch with reality. Edited April 2, 2023 by vikingTON

Leaving aside the open goal that Road Tax was abolished in 1937 I'm sure I read fairly recently that there are already plans to inroduce taxes on electric cars for using certain roads. Which, along with the exorbitant costs to replace the battery down the line, is another reason to continue to buy and run cheaper ICE cars far into the future. 24 minutes ago, virginton said: The idea that the UK is a car-hostile environment is out of touch with reality. DA Baracus
A train ticket from Inverkeithing to Dundee today costs £35*. That's a single. I know it's usually not that expensive when buying in advance, but what if you unexpectedly had to travel on the day? The service bus is far cheaper but takes over double the time of the train. *Aside from three specific trains, two of which cost £18 and one £13.

When you got off the train at his station, the bus was sitting waiting on passengers. If the train was late, the bus waited for the train. Whereas, when I used to use the train from Falkirk to Edinburgh for Uni, I lost count of the number of times the bus would be pulling out of Falkirk High just as the train was arriving. They do the same here. Still a pleasant surprise for me any time my train or bus runs late and the connection sits and waits until it comes in.
DA Baracus
Bus fares recently went up in Dundee, at least on the Xplore ones. The cheapest single ticket is now £2.75. Day tickets are now £4.40.
ICTChris
I read an exchange on Twitter about the forthcoming introduction of the Glasgow Low Emissions Zone. Off the top of my head, petrol cars since 2005 and diesel vehicles post 2014 will be OK, which will surely cover the vast majority of cars. The issue could be vans - the figure of 40% of vans being non-compliant was raised. There isn't an exception process - you can't pay to be allowed in, you get fined and that's that. So from 1st June there could be difficulties for white vans either getting fined or being unable to drive into the LEZ. Any P&Bers white van drivers who are up in arms about the LEZ? There's a protest planned, doubtless it'll be full of moon howling nutcases but in the real world could this have an impact on Glasgow city centre businesses? Or will it all be OK?
Guest
Solar power spending predicted to be larger than investment in oil extraction for 2023 (when comparing global aggregates). I bought it in London a couple of years ago at a significant discount from similar cars up here as it did not comply with their local London LEZ rules. I was brought up, educated and have worked almost all of my life in Glasgow but, for the forseeable, all the money I have spent in the city centre businesses on coffees, lunches etc over the past 25 years is now getting spent outwith the centre. The LEZ is a laudable goal but without a functioning economy the city centre is dead. Has anyone else been across Blythswood hill in the last few weeks? Nothing but tumbleweed…

If the LEZ has inconvenienced you to the extent that you will take your lovely range rover elsewhere and regret your opportunistic purchase, I'd regard that as unequivocal win.
alta-pete
My post was more about the loss of business to the restaurateurs in the city centre but no matter. One up for the peepul it seems.
