the_bully_wee
To me, Docherty looked like he had a decent game. Mortimer not so much but Cuddihy will no doubt replace him. Splaine is a player. Some absolute brain damage stuff being said in here. That was tough to watch at times and things definitely fell apart a bit with all the subs but it’s a clean sheet and a decent win against a bunch of cloggers with a red that killed the game. Personally I seen some decent stuff tonight considering that was our first competitive game. Can’t stand some of our fans sometimes by the wayWas it definitely Broadwood you were at this evening? Docherty is an absolute liability defensively, Splaine constantly gave the ball away/got caught wrong side in the first half and we mustered only a few credible chances against a bang average (at best!) League 2 side. Serious cause for concern all-round, between our paucity of creativity and the regularity with which Stranraer cut us open.
Jack Phillips
I also thought Docherty had a decent game but still far too slow to be playing as a fullback, Splaine does look like a great find and his passing is incredible. People need to remember it's still early days and the new squad need time to gel. Think another 2 defenders would help improve the team going into the league. Blew up for absolutely everything he could. At least twice Jones got pulled up for simply backing in. Stranraer are cloggers. Couple of boys here pushing the panic button after one competitive game, which we literally won and kept a clean sheet in. Absolutely bananas. I am genuinely pishing myself laughing at some of the big brain stuff being written here. Aye we seen some shite but we’re a League 1 team. Splaine had a couple of shakey moments but really grew into the game. Balatoni was great, Docherty looks overweight and won’t last but had a good game on the whole, was really vocal and took the onus for organising the younger boys. Kennedy looks a player. The other subs/Mortimer, aye, bit guff but we’ll no doubt get some loans in to cover that. After initially being a bit panicked at our business I’ve now seen us play three games and it’s settled me right down, especially when looking at our competitors.

Probably not quite as hard as some will have laughed at the suggestion of not attending games if the club signed a Conservative voter, mind. I fully understand the desire to be optimistic at this juncture, but tonight simply served to confirm many of the fears we have about this squad, especially those at the back.

So it isn't just me who can mistype. Pickiness aside, I agree entirely on the referee who is normally one of the better ones. His biggest error was not sending off Gomis. I did think we should have had a later penalty when Mortimer was shoved over. I didn't really see the original spot-kick due to a face mask induced steaming up of my sunglasses. I can't agree at all that Stranraer were cloggers though, they played good football and with a better centre forward than Muir would have won the game. I'm also struggling to remember a bad tackle on their side. Docherty was vocal. He's a decent footballer; he probably doesn't give the ball away in a fives game. I'd have 100% wanted us to sign him 5, 10 years ago; he's the sort of player we've missed having. However, the number of crosses that came in from his side was ridiculous, with him standing miles off the Stranraer winger having been rinsed the first time he closed him down. It was happening every time, noticeably so. Stranraer were also looking to exploit him every single time, perhaps to the detriment of several attacks where they had other options. Splaine, Balatoni and Kennedy are fine. Apart from rightly being critical of a poor first half Splaine performance, I'm not reading people saying otherwise? That sort of box-to-box aggressive midfield is a godsend. Overall, I'm sure our first eleven will compete. The drop-off in quality after that first eleven is staggering though and that was fully evidenced tonight.

As bad as the ref was, at least he wasn't conned with that defenders pathetic attempt at claiming for a foul when Goodie simply outmuscled him on route to winning the penalty.
BullyWeeLad
First game of the season tonight, no pass marks for me.. still early days and players settling in but if we play like that in the league we are in trouble EDIT - no pass marks other than Mitch Edited July 14, 2021 by BullyWeeLad
Bully Wee Clyde FC
Strange match We went from being very composed against an admittedly poor Airdrie, to escaping with 3 points against bleeding Stranraer. I don't share the confidence of some of my fellow fans have in Rumsby and in particular his passing. We looked pretty exposed on both flanks. Our MF looked flat footed and unable or maybe willing to find the simple pass. As David said, we might have a serviceable first 11, but beyond that we look on the basis of 2 games I accept, no better than last season.
Jaggy Snake
Docherty is a frustrating one as he looks like he would have been a decent player when he was younger, and is fairly intelligent & composed on the ball for a defender. However, he isn't just a bit slow, his pace and acceleration are diabolical. Every team will target him if he plays regularly. He does look to be carrying some extra weight and will hopefully get fitter but that won't improve his pace much. We might have got away with that if we had an (in form) Tom Lang type inside of him but, Rumsby and Docherty are unlikely to ever work as a pairing. (I'm not having a go at Rumsby here who I still like and he did some decent things today, and some rubbish things too). A regular issue we've had recently is that it feels like we'd need to be allowed a team of 12 players on the park to compensate for all our deficiencies, and I'm not sure that's changed this year. I'd stick with Mortimer at right back for now, he's made a couple of impressive blocks through shear commitment alone so far. Cuddihy isn't a good enough right back anyway, so he should be playing on the right wing in front of Mortimer. That would give us lots of energy on that side and hopefully some cover. Cunningham obviously has to start from the left with Love through the middle. But it still kind of feels like we need three central midfielders in behind that, which obviously isn't possible. I'd quite like to see Gomis and Kennedy starting, with Splaine replacing Gomis after 55-60 minutes for a more creative option. I thought Jones did quite well when he came on but we lost so much in the middle of the park with Gomis and Cuddihy both going off, the game got away from us more than it should have. I'm certainly not panicking at this stage, but unless we can add a couple of good loan players we could fall frustratingly short of a decent team again. He headed over from right in front of the goal after Splaine put it on a plate for him. Tried to pass when in a great shooting position another time and lost possession. He doesn’t look like a footballer and his instincts are way off for a striker, on top of that he completely lacks conviction.
Guest
See coming onto P&B that there are some concerns to work on, that's fine. See roaring at a player 14 minutes into their debut for your team that they're "fucking useless" why did you bother coming back after a year away?
haufdaft
Just listened to Danny's post match reaction. The back four, it seems, we're "outstanding".
Adolfo Rios
Danny does touch in hyperbole from time to time but he also said the performance was poor and went as far as apologising for it. The defending, Balatoni aside, was nowhere near the level we need going forward but this was our first competitive match of the season and we were in neutral the whole match and won. Lucky? Yes. Time for panic? Not for me. Half a new squad still gelling etc.

SLClyde
Think we can all agree we didn’t play that well last night, but to be saying it’ll be a long season etc already is pressing the panic button at this stage. I thought Balatoni and Rumsby were pretty decent together, Mortimer was alright but Docherty needed off after an hour max, don’t know how many times Stranraer got in behind. Gomis broke the play up well, but probably should’ve been sent off. Splaine looks a decent player too. Thought Cunningham looked sharp, we could do with a good season out of him. Stranraer played some decent stuff and have a few good players, 14 and 17(I think) especially. We’ll obviously need to be better, but it’s still early days.

Half a new squad still gelling etc. I honestly think I seen enough last night to show that there’s potentially a very good L1 team out there. This talk of “serious issues” after a competitive victory/clean sheet is fairly wild. Cuddihy in at RB, Livingstone starting at LB and Kennedy replacing Cuddihy in CM are the moves. We’d ideally sign another centre half and a specialist RB but with Mortimer and Cuddihy I don’t think it’ll happen. On another note and in a vain attempt to keep things positive, I’ve been critical of Jones on here but his mere presence on the park allows Goodie to drop in as a number 10 and utilise his footballing ability to a greater effect, I think that could be a really interesting change we see this season at various points.
Jan Vojáček
Morning guys. I've never see Joshua Bradley-Hurst play, but I hope he does a good turn when he's called upon by you guys. I spoke to him back in April time and he was a really nice big guy who has had a tough time of it through injury. It's a bit of shameless self-promotion, but here's how his move to Dumbarton came about - via being teammates with Jude Bellingham and working nights making PPE. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/local-sport/dumbartons-joshua-bradley-hurst-playing-23959934
