I'm sure the NCL clubs have thought about the consequences of promotion. Golspie winning a future NCL/NRJFA play-off and going to the HL is a very real possibility, and it's not as if that doesn't involve a hell of a lot of travel. The difference would be the extra travel in the HL compared to NCL would, to at least a degree, be subsidised with the income increase promotion would bring. A HL2, at least at the outset, would have more travelling than the HL would (I think?) but without the extra income and exposure of the Highland and less away fans. Both the NCL and the North Juniors work well for the clubs involved so nae need to fix what isn't broken. Give the clubs the opportunity to climb up without harming them at the moment seems a good compromise. FWIW I would like to see the HL relegated two clubs a year (with one team coming up) until they reach 16 clubs. The extra fixture dates this would produce would allow a national non-league cup. Dunno how much interest the HL clubs would have in it mind you.

There's a reason Fort William stayed in the HL over choosing to go into the NCL again.

If you get relegated in any pyramid you drop into a league with a decrease in exposure and income and, the basic idea, is that it's offset with less travel. It would hurt Brechin to get relegated into the HL but, nae luck Brechin, yer shite. It hurts to get relegated. At least they have the opportunity to bounce back.

HL 32 game season, NCL 16 game season. How many clubs do you know would lose over 40% of their home league games? The North Region is still in the SJFA.
FairWeatherFan
By the way one of the things i've seen suggested is that the Highland basically copies the current Lowland Pyramid Play-off. Instead of licenced EoS Champion v. licenced SoS Champion for promotion. Just with licenced NCL champion v. licenced North Super League champion. Since the NCL tends to finish is April due to its numbers and the North Region Super League tends to finish in May. How are people thinking of lining up the fixture lists? Or are they happy with the NCL champion possibly having a month off before a play-off?

Jimmy Shaker
What is your current assessment about how this will end up and when?f**k knows any more. There’s been meetings had between the various league, no one really knows what the others are thinking. The NRJFA seem treacle slow to do anything, the SHFL seems to think this isn’t their problem and the NCL are just sitting waiting. Dare say we won’t be allowed to much longer sitting on the pot tho.

Lossie have no real connection to either but I’d rather not enter the world of the juniors just as it’s about to expire.

I realise the North Regions is still SJFA but we're presuming they've moved senior at this point in the conversation. As for the drop off in games, as pointed out, the NCL has cups to make up the number to a degree. Added into that is the idea that, most likely, the NCL will improve and expand as part of the pyramid. Every club has to cut their cloth accordingly after a relegation and this would be no different albeit a bit more drastic than other instances. The other option is making the NCL clubs leave the NCL to go to summer football or welfare or whatever other option they have as they will find it just as difficult to combine the increase in travelling with no benefits to them otherwise. It's a bit incredulous to expect an entire league to throw everything that works for them out just in case one club being relegated doesn't like it. If HL clubs don't want to play in the natural feeder league in the pyramid then they can just... not get relegated?

If you set a fixed end date it's not hard to guarantee that you make it, especially given that the North Superleague only has 26 games to fit in anyway.

There's only 4 clubs in the HL that you can technically say are in the NCL area (Fort William, Wick Academy, Brora Rangers and Clachnacuddin). The most return to the NCL in terms of expansion has been Bonar Bridge who sit bottom having lost every game. Scored 10 goals, conceded 104 in 13 games. That averages out to less than a goal a game while conceding 8. Basically there isn't a ton of room for expansion for the NCL and even if they do there has to be a question over quality. Nairn St Ninian are looking good for another top half finish in the North Super League. If the Super League is no longer a SJFA league it would make more sense for Everyone east of Inverness to go to the Super League. Hell, even Inverness clubs should consider it since Inverness City rose up to the North Super League before encountering ground problems. The majority of Highland League clubs already have an overlap of junior clubs.

I'm thinking of Inverness City in particular.
Spyro
Crayons were out again Jimmy... HL1: 30 games. 1 automatically relegated, 2nd bottom in playoff with 2nd place in HL2... HL2: 22 games, no license required. 14 playing own conference home and away then 8 inter-conference games, 4 home and 4 away. 16th places team playoff against the winner of the tier 7 winners playoff. On the other hand Strathspey Thistle actually played in the North Region with Spey Valley United popping up in recent years a kind of replacement. Lossemouth as a town until fairly recently had Lossiemouth United and RAF Lossiemouth. Then there's Nairn St Ninian, Forres Thistle. Rothes don't have a junior side but they're surrounding on all sides by them. So we have an actual league covering an area, and not some association that just runs a cup for a handful of clubs.
LongTimeLurker
There used to be a bit of an argument on here over whether the NCL was really a senior league. Unlike the EoS and SoS setups the North Caledonian FA isn't directly affiliated to the SFA but is registered through the NoSFA. The junior and senior boundaries don't neatly match up as is also the case on Tayside.
