It goes to show the importance of a half decent manager. It still amazes me that our 14-15 squad performed so poorly. Obviously most of Craig's signings were gash, but we still had an incredible spine there and should never have been in trouble.

I mean, a squad with Kenny McLean, John McGinn, Jason Naismith, Stevie Mallan, Jim Goodwin, Steven Thompson, Lewis Morgan, Sean Kelly, Jeroen Tesselaar and Marian Kello in it should have had the quality to stay up.

Just goes to show what an absolutely shite manager and a few really, really bad signings to supplement those players can do. Especially up front. James Marwood, Ross Caldwell, Alan Gow and Callum Ball were the other forward options for an out of form and unfit Thompson.

We were dead in the water the minute Kenny McLean left on deadline day that year.

John McGinn was shite that season. No goals and don’t think he had any assists either. How good he was is summed up by the fact when he left on a free in the summer there was barely any interest in him. Pretty much any top flight club could have had him but he ended up having to drop a division and go to Hibs.

Goodwin was past his best and Lewis Morgan and Stevie Mallan were kids who made their senior debuts that year. Kelly, Naismith, Tesselaar and Kello are decent pros but their subsequent careers show they weren’t anything special. Not too surprised that they were in a relegated teams.

The two main factors of our relegation that year were Steven Thompson being injured and the last day sale of McLean. Thompson had just had three 15 goal+ seasons in a row. Take that out a team that was already flirting with relegation with him putting up those numbers and replace them with the strikers you named and it’s going to be a struggle. McLean was our best player and selling him on the last day of the January window when sitting 10th and replacing him with free agent Gow was the final nail in the coffin.

Club was stuck there though, Kenny had only agreed to re-sign for us that summer (no one else has been interested in him that year either) on the condition that he’d be allowed to leave should another club come in.

Anyway, back on topic...

That’s us relegated Dundee last year, kept Dundee United down in the playoff and relegated Hearts this year. What city club is next for the Buddie boot to the Championship in 2021?
