While some went peacefully, a large minority were intent on causing trouble. The RoI would have been better off with a good dose of the anti-clerical liberal and socialist politics that swept through most Roman Catholic majority countries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries but missed out on that and wound up with FF and FG as Tweedledum and Tweedledee instead.
