Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I drew the line at pots and pans, by was happy to applaud the NHS each Thursday.

Was it a pretty shallow gesture?  Definitely.

Did it actually bring in tangible improvements for those working in the service?  No

Was it something embraced by dafties and often ridden with hypocrisy?  Hell, yeah.

However, it was a communal feature during a time of isolation.  There was also something genuinely a bit heart warming about appreciation for a body so collective, an organisation essentially socialist ion its conception, the very notion of which is so divisive in America.

It's very easy, and not even necessarily wide of the mark in some respects, to mock it.  It did have some value at the time though and, to my mind, was worthwhile.

Always amused me that senior procurement managers who worked in the NHS from home get the free burgers, pizza and other discounts, but some other, non NHS key workers got nothing like the thanks or praise in comparison.

You're just standing at your front door clapping at other people who are standing at their door clapping at you.  Fair enough if there's someone walking past who has achieved something great and you're applauding them.

It was the most empty of gestures.  It wound me up far more than it should have.

I think that can be said about most gestures after they have been done a few times

My elderly mother was doing it the first couple of weeks, wobbling outside with her zimmer frame, a wee clap then a shouted bit of gossip with the neighbours. We were both shielded and on full lockdown so it was a wee break from the monotony. You'd get people waving from flat windows in the distance which was like a lonely cry. Found it quite moving but by week 3 she agreed we'd be better inside watching the telly.

I did the clap (steady) once, it was nice because some of my neighbours were shielding and they didn't get a chance to see anyone and they got a chance to say hello to their neighbours.  It was probably a bit much for them to be so isolated but quite a few of them were old and had health problems.

I don't like doing stuff like that so only did it once.  My neighbours probably think I hate the NHS and all nurses.  I'll probaby be euthanised next time I have to go to hospital because of this.

Will be some laugh when the nurses go on strike because they aren't getting the 15% payrise they want. Meanwhile the government will be baffled at the public support for such a measure, having encouraged a meaningless round of NHS idolatry with the clapping.

I think public support for Nurses will disappear in an instant if that happens. We all saw the stunning levels of jealousy when they were given the £500 bonus.

"Ah work in Top Shop, ah'm a key worker. Where's ma £500?!?!?!"

Never bothered with the clap, just thought it was a meaningless gesture that would achieve nothing. A neighbour decided to set off a few fireworks every week a minute early (and in broad daylight, what a knob) which just made me actively dislike it.

I (thankfully) have not been in a hospital for a long time, so haven't noticed if the non-clappers are relegated to an inferior service yet.

I see the US are moving away from using PCR testing from 1st January

Be interesting to see if the UK follows suit and, if it does, what impact this has on "case" numbers.

If you can point me to a part of my post that this disagrees with, that would be great.

You'll notice I didn't mention anything about why they were moving away from them, only that they are.

Sounds to me like they're allowing the testing process to be automated rather than using a fundamentally different technique. It's got nothing to do with the alleged false positives from PCR tests. I've no idea what expertise that second website you linked is supposed to have, they seem to be specialists in Vitamin D and the menopause.

Decided to make my way to Links Park to take in the Montrose game on Saturday with a few pals, something different and ticked off another ground, was a great day out.

Buoyed by about 8 pints we went into a bar in Montrose before jumping on a train and the track and trace was done via book, my mate signed first and I noticed he had signed in as Gary Locke, I decided to trump him and signed in as Bert & Ernie and left the old “Your Call with Jim Traynor” phone number as my contact number.

Needless to say the lassie went apeshit about 10 mins later and chucked us out.

Would do again.

Applying for a mask exemption certificate when you don't need one is bizarre behaviour. Might as well pen V.L. on your forehead.

Yup, and it undermines the credibility of people who really do need one.
