Colts Teams

It has been pointed out to me that I could be wrong about ICT being the most likely first colt team in the pyramid. It might be Nairn County U20 as soon as next weekend as they may have applied to join the North Caledonian League and that league is on the verge of becoming a tier 6 feeder to the Highland League next season:

Now back to the usual bile.

First in the Highland side maybe. There have been 5 so far on the Lowland side Spartans, Stirling University, Annan Athletic, Stranraer, and Caledonian Braves.

North Caledonian League has had reserve teams in it for the majority of its existence. Historically, it was the Highland Reserve League, with the second XIs of the HFL clubs plus others, hence its quasi-senior status. Clach were the last HFL club, they left in 2014. Even Fort William managed a reserve team in the last decade!

A U20 team is not the same concept as a reserve team. Colt teams are used to give young players experience playing against more experienced players in a normal league setup rather than having them playing in an age specific youth league against players their own age. That is what Nairn County have been doing in NCL cup competitions and now appear to want to do in league games as well.

Let them bring back their reserve League.

Did you miss the big song and dance they made over the return Reserve team football in 2018-19? They went from a 14 team Development League that played a 26 game season. To a SPFL Reserve League of 18 teams that played each other once. There is also a Reserve League Two.

The 18 team Reserve League lasted all of one season as Celtic, Rangers, Hibs, Falkirk, Aberdeen, Dundee, Partick Thistle, and St Johnstone all seem to have withdrawn.

Watched a few reserve games last couple of years, sterile tippy tappy rubbish - obviously trained that way to feed into their 1st teams. Any colts or res sides would soon grumble about over zealous tackling etc. If the Reserve lge isn't doing its job, I partially blame the clubs. As with in England, reserve teams usually only last a couple of seasons before pulling out for 'financial' reasons.

It was looking a little ominious there, but the talk of scrapping seems to be purely about the 2020-21 season due to the circumstances. Which is entirely understanable. Hopefully they take the time to consider what it looks like beyond that and come up with something long term. But i'm sure we'll hear all about colts again at some point in the next year.

Reserve leagues made more sense back when there were only two subs. The reverse fixture would happen for the reserves on a Saturday to keep the rest of the first team squad active. Different story now there are seven subs including a goalie.

Is this colts thing going to be discussed at any AGM or something ? or was it just based on someone hearing some gossip ?  I think the promotion issue puts the idea to bed, along with being totally unfair on clubs trying to reach the pot of gold SPFL.

Not this year. Looks like its done for now. It was just involved in a couple of SPFL reconstruction proposals. None of which gained any traction.
