As an Aberdeen fan of a certain vintage I am glad that Morton are not being mentioned much. I still get the fear thinking about trips to Cappielow.

Aye, but really handy for the train station. Cartsdyke?

It’s pretty common practise amongst Scottish pundits and punters to describe clubs as ‘premiership’ sides, regardless of whether or not they occupy a place in the top division. Similarly, many teams seem to be perceived as ‘lesser’ despite having established themselves in the premiership for a number of years.

I’m no different and totally guilty of being influenced by my own biases and preconceptions, and wonder how much my own idea differs to everyone else’s.

So put simply, in a totally non scientific manner, who do you perceive as the 12 most ‘premiership‘ teams in Scotland in order of Premiership-ness. I’d go for,

1.Celtic

2. Rangers

3. Aberdeen

4. Hearts

5. Hibs

6.Dundee United

7. Motherwell

8. St Mirren

9. Dundee

10. Killie

11. Dunfermline

12. Falkirk

What would you change?

How the hell have you got some of those sides ahead of Killie when we've been in the top flight for 27 years on the spin and likes of Dundee/St Mirren etc couldn't find the top flight on  map for the lot of that time?

It seems like some people need to update their textbooks.

Motherwell and Killie have over 60 combined years unbroken in the top flight.

I always laugh when Utd fans think they are much bigger clubs than the likes of Killie and Motherwell.

I'm 36 and they certainly haven't been in my lifetime.

Aberdeen
Celtic
Dundee
Dundee Utd
Hearts
Hibs
Inverness
Kilmarnock
Motherwell
Rangers
St Johnstone

Then a toss up between Livi/Hamilton/St Mirren/Ross County for the last place.

Dunfermline/Thistle and Falkirk are the only other teams I can think of that have had any time in the top flight since I started properly going to the fitba.

That table is probably the best representation of modern day Scottish football on this thread so far in terms of established Premiership clubs.  In order of total Premiership points over the past 22 seasons:

Total points       Average points per season in prem (1998-2020)

Celtic                   1947                         88.5

Rangers             1457                         80.94

Aberdeen          1182                         53.73

Hearts                 1079                          51.38

Motherwell         1053                         47.86

Kilmarnock         1027                         46.68

Hibs                          876                         48.67

Dundee United    822                         45.67

St Johnstone       721                          48.07

Inverness CT         576                         48

Dundee                   520                         40

st  mirrens               425                         35.42

Hamilton Accies   339                         37.67

Dunfermline            338                        37.56

Ross County            286                        40.86

Livingston                 272                        38.86

Partick Thistle         231                        38.5

Falkirk                         201                        40.2

Anyone looking for an indication of st mirrens relevance to the top flight in Scotland need look no further than their average points per season. If ever there was a club that would do an open top bus parade for finishing 11th, then they would surely be it.

Kilmarnock's average points total looks higher than expected here.. Steve Clarke aside, I generally think of Killie as finishing somewhere around 8th-10th most seasons.

I remember seasons with Ayr, Dumbarton, Raith, some team called Rangers and Airdrie but I wouldn’t class them as textbook premiership

Soon.

Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, Dundee, ICT, Ross County, Motherwell, Kilmarnock and then some other Central Belt jobbers. Probably St Johnstone at this stage, thanks to Tommy Wright.

That's your Premiership.

We've still had eight top 6 finishes and another three years in 7th.
