For this week's results, I trawled the chess.com gamelist to see if I could find results that either I'd missed or hadn't been reported. The trouble with this method is that I don't know if you guys are playing each other in friendlies or games in other tournaments that don't affect the league, so any results I've found this way are recorded below - if I made a mistake, please correct me. Happily, for every outstanding result, there's either a game in progress or a (provisional) result to record.

|-------+---------------------------+------------------------|
| Round | Game | Status |

All the results are now in for Divison B, and this season's runaway winner is newcomer redVtop / @Caro-Kann - the guy with the chess name on the football forum and the football name on the chess site. From his near-perfect winning record this season, and his cup upset against Trogdor, it looks like we'll have a likely challenger for the top spot next season. Congratulations and very well played!

Joining him in the automatic promotion spot is pleslie999 / @pleslie99 who also put in a very good showing and in third place is PnbMathematics / @mathematics - league restructure permitting, he'll have some chance of promotion to division A via playoff.

And thanks to all the players of Division B for making this a very easy to run tournament. I hope to see you guys back next season, once we've sorted out the other, (rather less prompt), division and the playoff spots!

P&B Cup

No rush guys, but if there's only one game left by this weekend we'll go for a Cove / Brora thing and just draw the next round anyways.

P&B Cup

Apologies for the delay.

Cost me another £2, but I reckoned I best take it before the kid starts demanding more - like £3,  or a meta-headset thingy.

Bairns, eh?

Anyways, here's what she pullled out the bag this time.

Im not sure this will work as ive never tried or done this before.

looking for some insight, I'm reviewing one of my many humblings from @pleslie99

My last move was KG5 (sorry don't know how to type or explain moves) on my review it says it was a blunder and the best move was QH7. After that, a few moves down the line I would be -5, how can that be the best move?

Genuine question if anybody has an answer. I've just started reviewing games and trying openings on Lichess and I am trying to improve so any tips, feedback, all is appreciated.

What square was your knight on prior to playing Ng5   ?

Looking at chess.com, it seems that the reason is that the engine thinks that otherwise, black has a small advantage. So a draw is in your favour. So after Qxh7 Nxh7 Bxh7 Kh8 then you can force a repetition draw by moving that bishop to and from h7. So this is really just machines being machines. Most people wouldn't be at the level where they could reliably evaluate this position as being very slightly black-favoured, so don't feel too bad!

That makes sense, I see it now. Thank you for explaining.

Hey @BaSeDG0DSA1NT, there's a pretty decent guide on notation right here:

https://chessily.com/learn-chess/chess-notation/

The almost exclusive way of recording moves these days is the "algebraic" notation. This is how chess.com records the moves. Where:

K: King
Q: Queen
R: Rook
B: Bishop
N ( or sometimes Kt ) : Knight
Pawn: No Notation.
x: Captures
O-O or O-O-O: castles

And so on. You can find out the rest via the link.

Clearly there can be two Rs, 2Bs and 2Ns on the board, so refer to the "ambiguous moves" section for how that is handled.

Of course just to complicate things, there is/was also another, less-fashionable way to record the moves, referred to as the "Descriptive Notation".

This is how things are written in my copy of this book, an original published in the early seventies (a highly recommended read btw):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fischer-Spassky-World-Chess-Championship/dp/4871875148/ref=sr_1_1?crid=PQCI3TLFQ0M3&keywords=fischer+v+spassky+gligoric&qid=1706901071&sprefix=fischer+v+spassky+gligoric%2Caps%2C101&sr=8-1

Showing my age, but we were still using the Descriptive when I was at school. Takes a bit of mind-adjustment to switch between the two.

Stick with the algebraic I'd say. The older style is gradually disappearing and will most likely only appear in old books/games from now on.

I did have to fish another result out of the chess.com gamelist, a draw between the_kid1433 and AH13STU, so if that wasn't a league match, please correct me

There are five matches still to complete, all in progress, as far as I can tell, with stuff to play for at both ends of the table (if AlbinoRov doesn't get a result against AH13STU, the head-to-head results suggest that beef2711 gets the playoff spot)

14 AlbinoRov vs AH13STU

It doesn't make a significant difference to the standings, but in week 20 you've got me down as a loss against Kendeans whereas it should be a win.
