Oh! Here it is! And what's that caption below it? "This RAAC roof failed at Singlewell Primary School in Gravesend, Kent. Luckily nobody was underneath it at the time" OK, it's a picture of a school rather than a hospital, and it's in Kent (local MP: Adam Holloway, Con), rather than in Scotland, but hey! SNP baaaaad! What a bunch of duplicitous c*nts In RAAC concrete news today: https://www.theguardian.com/education/2023/aug/31/english-schools-told-to-close-buildings-made-with-crumble-risk-concrete More than 100 schools are facing the immediate closure of buildings constructed from potentially dangerous aerated concrete panels, plunging the beginning of term into chaos for thousands of pupils. The government has found that 156 schools in England have reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) materials but only 52 have put mitigations in place against risks including collapse, it admitted on Thursday. Engineers have warned the material is at risk of cracking and spalling and of “shear failure”. I'll look forward to the condemnatory tweet from the Scottish Conservatives.

They could maybe ask if the Conservative Govt could have done anything to stop things getting to this situation. Quote In 2010 a long-planned £55bn schools rebuilding programme, Building Schools for the Future, was scrapped by the then education secretary, Michael Gove, during the first months of the coalition government. He has since said he regretted the decision.
BFTD
Jim Hacker was contemplating bringing back National Service in Yes Minister forty fucking years ago. IIRC, the primary argument against it was that the Army considered itself to be a professional fighting force and didn't want to be a peacetime nanny service for the nation's feral youth. Just imagine being a teenager unnecessarily forced into fatigues by crypto-fascists whose entire generation was never in any danger of getting their bollocks shot off themselves, but who think you're the ones who need toughening up. Anyway, that's the RSPB grovelingly backed down and apologised for calling the government liars, as though it was a casual slip of the tongue rather than a series of pre-planned official announcements illustrated by professionally-produced photos. An interesting tale to be told there, methinks.

The fervent cries of "liar!" might well be less to do with environmental commitments and something more personal. Or I'm a miserable cynic. Probably both.

Dan Steele
A classic of the art of Tory lies and hypocrisy by Michael Gove (to the surprise of nobody). Having said Brexit would, amongst many other wonderful benefits, strengthen environmental protections and maintain European standards, well, fast forward. This week an environmental rule, proposed by Gove that he promised to protect, is "defective". Result - he's telling English local authorities to just ignore all that pesky extra sewage problems created by new developments in "sensitive areas" like the Lakes and Norfolk Broads. Great news for housebuilders/developers and the like. Ah, Brexit with its sunlit uplands reeking of shite.

Salt n Vinegar
I heard on Radio Scotland that the dodgy concrete problems in England will be fixed from within the existing Education budget. I'm sure that the English education authorities will be delighted at the news. Trebles all round. The same report indicated that as a result, there'll be no consequentials for Scotland.

As a society, we've apparently decided that governmental corruption is fine. They can take whatever they want, so long as they appear to be punishing The Bad People (foreigners, the poor, northerners, gingers). No wonder Labour are desperate to get back in. What a time to fill your boots.

Weird the way that the press get onside with a Labour government once it becomes clear they pose no threat whatsoever to capital. Weird.
