Miguel Sanchez
Week 31 update Two deaths this week. Up first was the scientist James Lovelock: James Lovelock, creator of Gaia hypothesis, dies on 103rd birthday | James Lovelock | The Guardian Quote The scientist James Lovelock’s discoveries had an immense influence on our understanding of the global impact of humankind, and on the search for extraterrestrial life. A vigorous writer and speaker, he became a hero to the green movement, although he was one of its most formidable critics. His research highlighted some of the issues that became the most intense environmental concerns of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, among them the insidious spread through the living world of industrial pollutants; the destruction of the ozone layer; and the potential menace of global heating. He supported nuclear power and defended the chemical industries – and his warnings took an increasingly apocalyptic note. “The planet we live on has merely to shrug to take some fraction of a million people to their deaths,” Lovelock wrote in 2006. “But this is nothing compared with what may soon happen; we are now so abusing the Earth that it may rise and move back into the hot state it was in 55m years ago, and if it does, most of us, and our descendants, will die.” In a speech to the Royal Society, he described the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as “the scariest official document I have ever read”. Put simply, there's quite a lot in this obituary. Off the top of my head he's probably the smartest person who's scored points since I started running the Dead Pool. He figured out how every living organism on the Earth exists in relation to each other. He invented the microwave. And... some other stuff I don't understand. Lovelock died at 103 so he's worth 22 Base Points to @Ray Patterson and he was @tamthebam's Captain, so it's 44 points for him. ================== The second death this week was the actor Bernard Cribbins: Bernard Cribbins obituary | Children's TV | The Guardian Quote During a full and varied career spanning more than 75 years as a much-loved, and very funny, character actor, Bernard Cribbins, who has died aged 93, was honoured by Bafta in 2009 with a special award for his work in children’s television. This encompassed story-telling in more than 100 episodes of the BBC’s Jackanory between 1966 and 1995; narrating and voicing all the furry creatures on all 60 episodes of The Wombles (1973-75); and gracing CBeebies as a retired fisherman spinning his yarns on Old Jack’s Boat (2013-15). I've seen him in one thing, Doctor Who. I rewatched it earlier in the year and I'd forgotten just how good those years were. That was even before I had all of the post-Tennant years to catch up on. The run of episodes he was in were so good that even Catherine Tate was bearable. That said, despite everything I've read about his legacy and his work, he's probably going to live on in this gif more than anything else: What a thing to leave behind. Cribbins died at 93 so he's worth 32 Base Points for @Sweaty Morph with a Solo Shot taking that to 82 points. As a result, the standings look like this: 1. Bishop Briggs 586 2. Indale Winton 530 3.
