Don't expect many folk to recognise the name, but he was part of the Scotland under 16 squad that were mugged by Saudi Arabia in the under 16 World Cup final at Hampden in 1989. After leaving Celtic he had spells with St. Mirren and Albion Rovers before joining Petershill. He was with us for 10 years and was terrific for us, despite losing almost 2 years after being diagnosed with Non Hodgkin Lymphoma. As well as being a great player he was also one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. RIP Jim. How tragic David Hagen from that U16 squad also died from MND
The_Craig
11 hours ago, Aim Here said: Right now, just under 2/3 of the Dead Pool population have managed to get at least one point. Since there's a little bit of moaning and rejoicing at not getting, or getting, clear of 0 points, I just had a quick look at the outstanding picks of the non-scorers to see if there was anything of note among the rosters of the yet-to-score. Maybe there's something about their picks that indicates the issue. It turns out that non-scorers are disproportionately likely to have marked the cards of Alex Ferguson (80% - 12 out of the 15 people who picked Fergie have yet to score), Joe Biden (7 out of 8, or about 88%), or Willie Nelson (66%, or 6/9). Ordinarily, we'd expect these figures to be hovering around 35%, give or take. And, as you'd expect, if you're the kind of person who's foolish enough to think that Keith Richards is mortal, you're not too good at judging anyone else's mortality. Not a single one of the 5 people who picked Keef have scored any points this year, so far. In the other direction, Shannon Doherty, Doddie Weir, Linda Nolan, Frank Field and George Alagiah are among the currently living people who are disproportionately picked *more* by the point-scoring majority. Meanwhile absolutely every single one of the 24 people who picked Rob Burrow (who is still alive enough to publicly rant in the direction of RyanAir) this year has also picked someone else who already died. No other (living) pick comes close to being a bellwether of Dead Pool skill as Burrow; the next contenders are a slew of folks with a mere 7 picks each (Piers Corbyn, Harvey Weinstein, James Whale, Tim Bilton and Joe Exotic). It seems that picking Rob Burrow is a baseline indicator of competence at this game. Joe Biden, not so much. That's pretty much my entire team you've described there. I'm like the 90's Mondeo Man of the DP

Miguel Sanchez
Week 36 update Two deaths this week. Up first, former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev: Mikhail Gorbachev obituary | Russia | The Guardian Quote Mikhail Gorbachev, who has died aged 91, was the most important world figure of the last quarter of the 20th century. Almost singlehandedly he brought an end to 40 years of east-west confrontation in Europe and liberated the world from the danger of nuclear conflagration. It was not the objective he set himself when he was elected general secretary of the Soviet Communist party in March 1985, nor did he predict or plan the way the cold war would end, the haemorrhaging of the Communist party, the withdrawal of Soviet troops from eastern Europe, the reunification of Germany or the break-up of the Soviet Union itself. What distinguished Gorbachev from previous Soviet leaders was that he started a process of reform and did not try to reverse it once it threatened to spin out of control. The great facilitator, he carried on, even to the point of resigning with dignity as his power faded away. Late 80s/early 90s history? Why, I bet there's a Simpsons moment that defines my understanding of these events "I just drop by with present for warming of house. Instead find you grappling with local oaf." Gorbachev died at 91 so he's worth 34 Base Points for @10menwent2mow, @Fuctifano, @HI HAT, @lichtgilphead, @Mark Connolly, @paulathame and @scottsdad, with @Hamish's Passenger getting a Vice-Captain bonus for 51 points. ===================== Second death this week was the TV presenter Bill Turnbull: Bill Turnbull obituary: Beloved BBC Breakfast host - BBC News Quote In November 2017, Bill Turnbull took part in a celebrity edition of The Great British Bake Off. The show was in aid of a charity, Stand Up to Cancer. During filming, he found he had the disease himself. He had been suffering from pains in his legs but hadn't wanted to bother his doctor. Eventually, his son persuaded him to take a blood test. At the end of the show, Turnbull broadcast an emotional message. He explained that his prostate cancer was terminal and had already spread to his bones. "A black curtain" descended after the diagnosis, he said. "If I had been tested a few years ago, we would have knocked it on the head." Within months, the number of men seeking a test for the condition increased by 250%. With comedian Stephen Fry announcing his own cancer diagnosis at around the same time, the response became known as the "Fry and Turnbull effect". Ironically for an obituary about someone who was clearly a very good journalist and broadcaster, the BBC doesn't really write these things in a condensed enough fashion to quote effectively here, so rather than any details about him or his his life you can just get that bit about his cancer diagnosis. By my count almost all of the people participating in the Dead Pool this year have prostates, so regardless of what age you are give this a read and keep it in mind: What are the symptoms of prostate cancer? | Prostate Cancer UK Turnbull died at 66, so he's worth 59 Base Points for @Aim Here, Bishop Briggs, @buddiepaul, @chomp my root, @D.V.T., @Fuctifano, @gkneil, @HI HAT, @Indale Winton, @lichtgilphead, @peasy23, @psv_killie, @qos_75, @senorsoupe, @The_Craig, @The DA and @thistledo.
